Freight customers looking for sustainability from suppliers

EECA is increasingly getting enquiries from businesses we work with about how they can influence their supply chain to improve their overall sustainability.  For many of New Zealand's largest companies, freight is a large component of their carbon dioxide emissions.

Once businesses have sorted their own energy management, they are looking to their suppliers to do the same. Transport companies in the Heavy Vehicle Fuel Efficiency Programme will be at an advantage when these requests come through from large freight customers.

Diesel prices

Everyone is enjoying the low diesel prices at the moment, but just because it costs less doesn't mean we should waste it.

The habits the Heavy Vehicle Fuel Efficiency Programme form take months to embed in a company and its culture.  Taking your eye off the ball, even for a few months can leave you back where you started - placing your company at a disadvantage when fuel prices rise again (which history shows is inevitable) and when your customers start asking for carbon dioxide emissions data (which will come from your fuel burn) to inform their own sustainability reports.

Two more operators standing out from the crowd

Dunedin Carrying and Booths Transport have both recently featured in DieselTalk magazine for their work in the EECA Heavy Vehicle Fuel Effciency Programme.

Booth's Transport Operations Manager Dave Sharp says the first noticeable difference since implementing the EECA programme, combined with their own programme 'Project Pride', is the quality of people applying for jobs with Booth Transport and an improvement in attitudes of existing staff members. Read the article about Booth's Transport here.

For Dunedin Carrying General Manager Owain Carter, the EECA programme was an opportunity to change culture to better mitigate risk and improve public safety. Carter says he strongly believes in the development of a stable and positive workplace culture supported by continuous improvement to health and safety processes. "One hugely positive result from the programme is a big drop in complaints from the public about the behaviour of the Dunedin Carrying Company trucks on the road." Read the article about Dunedin Carrying here.

We're always happy to publicise the great work of companies in the programme. If you're happy to tell your story, get in touch with the EECA team at heavytransport@eeca.govt.nz
