Explore stories of life and death with a new audio trail

East Perth Cemeteries represents a cross-section of society from 1829 to 1899.  It holds stories of commerce and government, family and relationships, exploration and change, faith and community, hardship and struggle, love and, ultimately loss.

It has been estimated there were up to 10,000 burials but today fewer than 800 graves have survived the fires, clean-ups and urban encroachment that have had an impact on the place.

Through a combination of prominent signage and intimate audio recordings the National Trust is now sharing some of these stories with visitors to the Cemeteries.

Find out more about the tragic story of a young mother and son and the moving monument built by the husband and father they left behind, uncover the details of Rosalind Fox's untimely and brutal murder and discover how the Chinese helped build the Swan River Colony are now resting within Karrakatta Cemetery.

Meet the 2023 Prelude Composers in Residence

We are delighted to announce the two Australian composers awarded the Prelude residencies in 2023. Prelude is a national network of long-term residencies for Australian composers, housed in historic buildings, providing time and space for the creation of new work.

In 2023 the 2 composers in-residence will be Olivia Davies and Jae Laffer. Both Western Australian artists, Davie will spend 12 months in the Peggy Glanville-Hicks Composers' House Trust in Sydney, while Laffer will take up residence in Gallop House in Perth.

Jae Laffer is a songwriter, producer and musician. He recorded six albums as lead singer and songwriter of The Panics, collecting numerous awards along the way including an ARIA and Triple J Album of the Year. He has subsequently released two solo albums and will spend his time in Gallop House working on a third, with a series of collaborators.

Olivia Davies recently won the prestigious award for Work of the Year: Large Ensemble at this year’s AMC/APRA Art Music Awards for her piece “Stratus” which was commissioned and premiered by the WA Symphony Orchestra. During her time in the Peggy Glanville-Hicks House she will work on a range of new commissions and collaborations.

The program is made possible through the generous support of the Peggy Glanville-Hicks Composers Trust, Bundanon Trust, Australian Council for the Arts, APRA AMCOS ,  Create NSW and the National Trust of Western Australia.
