North West Transmission Developments permit confirmed

An independent tribunal has affirmed the Tasmanian Planning Commission’s (TPC) decision to grant the planning permit for the North West Transmission Developments (NWTD), clearing the way for construction to start on TasNetworks’ largest-ever infrastructure project.

An appeal against the permit was lodged with the Tasmanian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (TASCAT) in March 2026, preventing construction activities authorised under the permit from proceeding while the matter was considered.

With the appeal now determined and the TPC’s decision upheld, the project can now progress into construction.

TasNetworks’ NWTD Project Director, Richie Sheather, said the outcome cleared the final major hurdle before construction could start.

“After years of planning, we can now move forward with certainty and focus on delivering this important infrastructure for Tasmania,” Mr Sheather said.

“TASCAT’s decision reinforces what the planning assessment process had already found: that the project meets Tasmania’s regulatory requirements, appropriately manages environmental and community impacts, and can be delivered safely and responsibly.

“We look forward to issuing notice to proceed to our head contractor Genus very soon, following final administrative requirements.”

NWTD is a major upgrade of Tasmania’s electricity network to ensure it remains strong and stable. Stage 1 includes 129 kilometres of new and upgraded transmission lines, as well as new substations and a switching station, extending from Cressy to Burnie via Sheffield.

The project will support new renewable energy developments and create significant opportunities for Tasmanian communities and businesses, while helping keep future electricity prices as low as possible.

“TasNetworks is building NWTD for Tasmanians who want the lowest possible future prices, strong climate action, clean energy careers, and enough clean energy for Tasmania and Australia’s future,” Mr Sheather said.

TasNetworks is also investing into local communities through its $10 million community investment program.

The recently launched Bright Future Fund is focused on creating a positive, lasting legacy for areas surrounding NWTD, with successful first round projects expected to be announced next month. The second round of funding will open later this year.
