As MTPConnect heads into its ninth year delivering programs, initiatives and SME accelerator support to build businesses for the long term and the sustainability of the Australian medical technology, biotechnology and pharmaceutical sector, I am delighted to share some of the exciting initiatives the team is leading in the months ahead. With a challenging funding landscape for start-ups and SMEs, our Adelaide team has pulled together a stand out event to kick off the SA Insights Series for 2024, focused on identifying sources of funding to drive development of your innovation. Jo Close, Director for the Adelaide Intermediary Program, is hosting a fireside chat on 29 February with leaders from the big national funding programs that drive Australia's healthtech innovations. Guest speakers will provide insights on programs from the Industry Growth Program, MRFF, CRC and CRC-P initiatives, National Reconstruction Fund and Australia’s Economic Accelerator. If you’re trying to secure funding this year, register now for this Adelaide event to avoid disappointment. If you are in Perth next week, the first WA MTP Sector Spotlight event for 2024 is also a must attend. The focus is on medtech commercialisation with real-world insights from two sector leaders on what it takes to bring a novel medical technology to market. MTPConnect’s Dr Tracey Wilkinson from the WA Life Sciences Innovation Hub will be speaking with Jill Anderson (OncoRes Medical Non-Executive Director) sharing her experiences in the US and Dr Katharine Giles (OncoRes Medical CEO/MD; Brandon Capital Venture Partner) providing the Australian perspective. If your focus is international markets, MTPConnect is backing the Australian mission to BIO2024 which takes place in San Diego from 3-6 June. The BIO International Convention is the largest biotech and pharma business partnering event in the world. It presents a unique opportunity to showcase innovations from Australia and our research and industry capabilities, all with a view to securing partnerships, investment and revenues across the healthtech sector. To support Australian researchers and companies to get the most out of BIO, MTPConnect is hosting the Team Australia pavilion to send a strong ‘open for business’ message and provide a central location for business meetings. And prior to the start of conference, MTPConnect is hosting the official Australian Welcome and Business Reception on Sunday 2 June 2024. This premier event is ideal for networking and relationship building, particularly with international partners and investors who are interested in connecting with Australian companies. In delivering the BIO2024 mission we’re delighted to be working in strong partnership with the state
governments of NSW, Victoria, Queensland, Western Australia and South Australia, the Department of Industry, Science and Resources, CSIRO and AusBiotech. To join the Australian delegation in the US, contact your state government’s representative. And make sure to register for the convention – early bird rates end early March. In case you
missed it, we recently published our 2023 Annual Report which highlights impact and outcomes of MTPConnect activities during FY2023. To date, MTPConnect has injected $153 million into the sector, supporting 196 innovation projects across Australia. This investment has had a profound knock-on effect, leveraging more than $1 billion in additional industry contributions and flow-on external investment, allowing SMEs to scale-up and create new jobs. The overall economic impact of our work shows a total attributable return of around $6.5 billion. I encourage you to take a look at the report to find out how we are making a difference in the sector by helping SMEs across Australia to scale-up and turn innovations
into home-grown and life-saving new medical products. Some of these innovation projects are brought to life in the first episode for 2024 of our popular MTPConnect podcast series which is back for its sixth season in early February. The podcast team met with some of Australia’s trailblazing medtech companies at the Clinical Translation and
Commercialisation Medtech (CTCM) program’s first annual Symposium to find out how they are managing the commercialisation journey. With so much happening in the sector, our monthly newsletter is a great resource to keep you in the loop so read on to find out about opportunities, events and news updates. We look forward to connecting with you soon. Kind regards, Stuart Dignam

Case Study Showcase | South Australia's Biomanufacturing Industry Doctoral Training PhD+ program is a successThroughout 2023, two new Industry Doctoral Training Centres (IDTCs) in South Australia have hosted 27 PhD students from the state’s major universities as part of a pilot four-year program. Focusing on two critical technologies – biomanufacturing and quantum technologies – the IDTC PhD+ Program is part of the South Australian Government’s EXCITE Strategy to support a future-focused workforce. In the first year of the Biomanufacturing Industry Doctoral Training Centre (IDTC) PhD+ Program, participating students have gained access to industry knowledge and development opportunities in technical skills, leadership and commercialisation. Based on the UK’s Centres for Doctoral Training model, the IDTC PhD+ Program has several objectives: to foster a relationship between research and business; develop innovations of commercial relevance; and support greater mobility of graduates between research and industry. MTPConnect, through its Adelaide Intermediary Program (AIP), is delivering PhD Plus sessions as part of the biomanufacturing stream of the initiative. Alongside regular interactions with their project partners,
students attend interactive learning sessions throughout the year to complement their PhD projects. These sessions have featured guest speakers and visits to manufacturing sites, as well as networking events, roundtables and training activities. Find out more...
