In response to increasing road fatalities across many parts of Australasia, Austroads has published a report that sets out what successful road safety management looks like in practice and offers tested methods that transport agencies and their delivery partners can use to develop, implement and continually refine their road safety approaches. The Best Practice Guidance in Road Safety Management and Leadership: Proven Initiatives and Case Study Examples report supports integrated planning, stakeholder engagement, and institutional strengthening, helping governments align with road safety targets. It provides real-world case studies demonstrating successful initiatives, enabling practitioners to adopt practical, cost-effective methods that promote road user safety and optimise resource use. By applying this guidance, local governments can improve risk management, foster shared responsibility, and implement targeted interventions that save lives and reduce injury severity across their road networks. This strategic and collaborative approach ultimately contributes to a safer road environment and helps meet long-term zero road death and serious injury goals in Australia and New Zealand. Watch this video Austroads prepared for the Australasian Road Safety Conference 2025 featuring road safety experts sharing their experiences and perspectives on what's needed to strengthen road safety management. Guidance offers evidence-based strategies to protect bridges from flood damage
Austroads has published new national guidance offering evidence-based practices to strengthen bridge resilience against flood risks. With the increasing frequency of extreme weather events and flood-related damage placing growing pressure on bridge structures, Austroads Guideline for Flood Response and Recovery for Bridges helps governments by providing a structured framework to manage risks from floods, including scour identification, risk assessment, and recovery operations. Recent floods in Australia highlight the vulnerability of bridges to severe weather. Using this guideline helps governments design and rebuild flood-resilient bridges, reducing community isolation and economic disruption. Developed through a review of best practice, expert consultation and analysis of recent events, the guideline addresses both immediate operational needs during flood events and long-term resilience through better design, monitoring and maintenance. Austroads maps out its direction for future transport resilience guidance
Austroads has undertaken a detailed analysis in its latest report, exploring possible guidance approaches to meet the needs of transport agencies working to strengthen the resilience of transport systems against the impacts of natural hazards across Australasia. Drawing on stakeholder consultation and a review of national and international practice, Austroads has defined the focus for its future work, examining what resilience guidance is needed, what gaps exist in current resources, and strategies to deliver relevant and actionable support. It also introduces a guidance model with recommendations on the type of guidance Austroads should produce, supported by a roadmap that sets out development priorities and sequencing. Further updates to the Austroads Guide to Pavement Technology released
Austroads has published updated editions of four more parts to its Guide to Pavement Technology (AGPT). These updates respond to evolving materials, design practices and user needs. These updates feature improved clarity and formatting, editorial refinements, and technical enhancements. Part 2 introduces a new design procedure for lightly bound cemented materials and a revised characterisation of the post-cracking phase for heavily bound materials. “The Guide brings together decades of experience and research into a single, accessible document for engineers, designers, and students alike. We’ve worked closely with experts across the sector to ensure the Guide remains a practical, authoritative resource for practitioners," said Ross Guppy, Austroads Transport Infrastructure Program Manager. The updated parts include:

New Work Tip provides practical steps for paving asphalt in cold weather
Austroads has published a new Pavement Work Tip that provides practical advice on paving asphalt in cold weather to achieve good in situ compaction. The Pavement Work Tips are jointly produced by Austroads Asphalt Research Reference Group and the Australian Flexible Pavement Association. The Work Tips provide easy-to-digest information on various pavement construction aspects and should be of assistance to all pavement practitioners. Three existing Work Tips on sprayed sealing techniques, including for aggregate precoating, rolling of cover aggregate and binder volume correction, have also been updated to reflect current best practice. Austroads' management of the Victorian Road Safety Auditors Register
All currently accredited Victorian auditors who have provided their email addresses have been automatically added to the new Victorian Road Safety Auditors Register, which is managed by Austroads. Auditors now just need to confirm their details to complete the update. The VIC | Register is a secure online platform that helps auditors manage their accreditation, including new registrations, upgrades to Senior Auditor status, renewals, and submitting feedback. It also allows the public to search for registered auditors. The Department of Transport and Planning remains accountable for the Victorian road safety auditor accreditation program. This transition is separate from the Austroads National Harmonisation of Road Safety Audit Practice project, which is underway and expected to be completed in late 2026. That project aims to align audit practices across jurisdictions, improving consistency for practitioners who work nationally. Collaborating with stakeholders and partnersAustroads at the 2025 Australasian Road Safety Conference
Last month, Austroads co-hosted and attended the 2025 Australasian Road Safety Conference in Perth alongside the Australasian College of Road Safety. Our team presented key initiatives, hosted workshops, and ran a booth to showcase practical road safety solutions, including the Planning for Zero Framework, Safe System outcomes, and the 2025 AusRAP results. The conference provided an excellent opportunity to engage with practitioners, share insights, and advance our mission to make roads safer across Australasia. A highlight of the conference was Austroads sponsoring and presenting the Women in Road Safety Award, which this year was awarded to Judy Williams, from iRAP, for her outstanding contribution to global road safety leadership. Austroads is committed to championing women’s leadership, recognising its vital role in shaping a safer future for all. Watch leading road safety experts to share their insights and celebrate the powerful voices driving meaningful change and progress in our sector.
