RETHINK YOUR RECYCLING HABITS

To celebrate National Recycling Week next week, we're hosting a free Rethink Recycling virtual tour and trivia session with the Rethink Waste Education Centre

Join the fun on Tuesday 9 November at 7pm for a 75-minute virtual session to see where your recycling goes after it leaves your kerbside.

Planet Ark’s National Recycling Week, now in its 25th year, helps you to improve your recycling knowledge and to build better recycling habits.

You can take part by joining the Rethink Recycling online event, brushing up on your recycling knowledge, or discovering new tricks to cut down on waste and improve recycling and reuse.

Tune in to hear from Grace, our Waste Education Officer, on OKR FM at 9am Monday to brush up on your recycling knowledge and discover some new tricks to improve your recycling and reuse. Listen in on 98.3 FM (Wallan area) or 97.1 FM (Kilmore area) or live online on the OKR FM website.

WORM FARM AND COMPOST SUBSIDY

We're offering a Compost Bin and Worm Farm subsidy until the end of November, where residents can claim up to 50 per cent back for any compost bin or worm farm purchased at one of our participating retailers (capped at $50 for worm farms and $30 for compost bins).

The subsidy gives a low-cost opportunity to introduce composting and worm farming into home recycling routines, as well as reducing the amount of waste going into garbage bins.

Find participating retailers and how to claim on our website. Closes 30 November.

PARKING FOCUS Pressure on parking in main streets

The car parks in busy main streets and shopping strips are timed to encourage shorter stays to keep the spots free for shoppers and visitors rather than all day or longer term parking.

It's great to see our main streets busy after lockdown, but it does mean it is more important than ever that we try to keep these parking spaces turning over.

If you need to stay longer than the allocated time, please use one of the longer timed spots or an all day parking space.

You will need to walk a little further, but the shorter parking spaces really do help support our traders by encouraging more people to visit.

Please do the right thing and avoid a fine.

ARE YOU FIRE READY? Act now to protect your property

We live in a high bushfire and grassfire risk area in Mitchell, so it’s important to prepare your properties and make a bushfire survival plan well ahead of the hot summer months.

Have you taken these steps?

  • Plan what to do in the event of a fire
  • Download the VicEmergency app
  • Keep the grass short around your property
  • Remove, leaves, twigs and loose bark from around the home
  • Cut back overhanging tree branches within 10 metres of your house
  • Remove material that can burn from around your home (such as woodpiles)

The CFA has also launched a brand new website and it has same easy to find and helpful resources to help you plan ahead and find information in an emergency.

We are also able to offer click and collect printing for anyone who needs a hard copy of their vaccination certificate.

If you are are not double vaccinated, please check our website before attending a face-to-face service to see if you are able to attend on-site and what alternative arrangements may be in place.

Interested in rail trail art?

We are seeking ideas from our communities about a $1.2 million outdoor art project along the Great Victorian Rail Trail  between Tallarook and Mansfield.

Mansfield, Mitchell and Murrindindi Shire Councils are holding pop-up events and online sessions for people to find out more and share their ideas about the sort of art they would like to see and where along the rail trail to locate it. You can also get involved via an interactive online map and an online survey.

Community members with a keen interest in art, tourism and the Rail Trail are also encouraged to nominate to join a Community Reference Group, which will help select the art and locations.

We'll be at the Tallarook Farmers' Market this Sunday. We'll also be popping up at the main street in Seymour on Friday 12 November from 10am to 1pm and we'll be at Trawool Estate on Friday 4 December from 10.30am to 2.30pm.

Visit Murrindindi Shire Council's engagement platform The Loop for more details including how to register for online sessions on 23 November and 2 December.
