Welcome to the May edition of the Salamanca Market stallholder news Hi everyone, I hope you've enjoyed a great weekend and found some time to relax after a busy Saturday at the market. It was fantastic to spend time down at the market myself on Saturday, meeting new stallholders. I thoroughly enjoy hearing all about your businesses and how they have grown over time. I leave the market each and every time with genuine excitement for what each of you give to our locals and visitors each Saturday! As we approach the upcoming Council meeting on Monday, 22nd May, where Elected Members will make their decision on the Licence Agreement and site fees, I want to again acknowledge and thank you all for your feedback, time, and understanding as the process has progressed. These situations can be very unsettling for some I know, but to continue on and deliver our world class market each and every Saturday is something you should all be proud of. We've had so much to get excited about of late, and one of the highlights for me has been our 20 new casual stallholders who have now started trading - welcome to you all! The buzz was extra strong on Saturday, with some vibrant and fresh sites! Finally, I know this week bring some chilly days as we begin to head into the colder months, remember to rug and keep warm down there on Saturdays. Thanks everyone, Tristan Merrett - Manager Welcome Pad Above wooden wombats from The Edge of Nature Update on the new Licence Following on from the recent stallholder submission period, a number of amendments have been made to the draft Agreement for Licensed stallholders. Dark Mofo is coming The days are getting shorter and it's now time to start planning for those wonderful wet and woolly winter days and what your stall is doing to help people embrace winter in Tasmania. Dark Mofo is not far away so if you are making any Dark Mofo related or inspired products - let us know! Don't forget to email us at salamancamarket@hobartcity.com.au and let us know what winter things you are doing! Above A second hand clock. Upcoming promotions Recently we were asked to provide an update on marketing for the year ahead. Below are the themes that we have planned for the remainder of the year which we will be focusing on. As always we welcome stallholder content at any time, particularly around any news, new products or a feature story. May – Tasmanian honey - All things sweet and related to honey, or products that have honey in it. It's not too late to be a part of this one; June – Dark Mofo - All things red, quirky, arty or just a little bit unusual. We will once again be doing a red promotion at the market and focusing on stallholders that are celebrating Dark Mofo, dressing their stalls up or making special products. July – Winter warmers - This will be the cold winter months and we love to do a shout out on stallholders that have warm woolly products, a good book, hot drinks, hot food, and all of the other wonderful things that make a market enjoyable during winter. August – Tasmanian whisky - We will be featuring our whisky stallholders and would love to have some information on any new or rare varieties. September – Spring - This is an opportunity to focus on health, fitness, getting out and about and into the garden. October – Spring and Halloween - A continuation on the spring at the market and vibrant colours plus Halloween related products. November and December - Christmas - We start putting ideas together for Christmas presents and showcase the Tasmanian range. Above honey from Gusto One. Stallholder workshop ideas The City held nine workshops with stallholders between September 2022 and March 2023 which covered a range of topics including casual stallholders, approved product lines, site fees, licence agreement and patron congestion. A large number of ideas were received during these workshops which have been collected, sorted and considered. The team have now uploaded all of the ideas along with their status to the market's website. 13 ideas have already been implemented by the team, with another 16 ideas scheduled for implementation during 2023-24. Take a moment to view the ideas and see their progress. This is your feedback put into action! Above flowers from Undergrowth Experience. The Market Table update The Market Table will be a new and vibrant food and beverage scene within the market and will be complemented by curated entertainment, seating, shelter and pop-up activations. It’s important that this new area is designed so it expresses the right story, and help sets the expectation of a quality food and beverage experience, across different price points. The project has been quietly progressing with Food and Beverage contractor, Luke Burgess, continuing to work with interested stallholders. We have also recently secured the services of local company, Soda Projects, to deliver the design aspect of the project including tables and chairs for patrons, signage, banners, flags, waste bins, pop-up stalls and the entertainment area. Soda Projects have delivered some very exciting projects including the relaunch of Chadstone shopping centre, Dark Mofo, Taste of Tasmania, Panama Festival, Hanging Garden Precinct events, the Blundstone launch, The Gloaming, Terrapin Puppet Theatre and My Fair Lady theatre production. We are thrilled to be working with such a highly talented Tasmanian business for this project. Above goats milk soap from Touchwood Farm. Time to update your website profile Each year thousands of people visit the Salamanca Market website and are often looking for information about a particular stall, stallholder contact details, or searching for a product. Your stallholder page is an important way you can promote your business for free. Many of you may remember that we removed the stallholder section of the website during Covid, as not all stalls were trading and the stall locations were changing regularly. We are now reinstating these pages and, as much of the current information is old, we would like stallholders to update their information. There is a new form for you to fill out and it is rather long but it will enable us to add some extra details to your page to make it more useful. The new stallholder page design will include:
Please note that updates to the stallholder pages will be an ongoing project and will occur over several months. Above chocolates from Liquor Lips. Goodbye to the online store Thank you to all of our stallholders that supported our online store during Covid. The store was originally created to provide a revenue stream for stallholders while the market was suspended and interstate borders were closed. The online store is now going to be decommissioned as it is no longer required. Many of the products are quite old and traffic to the online store is quite low, especially now that Salamanca Market is back in full swing. Instead we are going to improve your listings on the Salamanca Market website as discussed above. This will be more helpful to customers, as they can then search by product type and will be able to click directly through to a stallholder’s online store from the main website. Major stallholder survey Stallholders had the opportunity to participate in the major stallholder survey earlier this year. The City has now received the final report from EMRS, which is 72 pages long. A summary document is currently being prepared, and this summary document along with the full report will be shared with stallholders in the coming weeks. Above blue iris from Undergrowth Experience. Grease trap reminder. There are two grease trap drains for the safe disposal of greywater. These are located on Salamanca Lawns behind site 260 and another behind site 179. Grey water must not be disposed of anywhere else. When disposing of greywater, all vegetable/ food matter and other debris must be cleaned from the top grate on the grease trap and placed in a green lidded compost bin (FOGO). Waste deep fryer oil must be removed from the market site by stallholders and cannot be disposed of onsite under any circumstances. Above Sparkling Elderberry wine Tuck yourselves in! A reminder to all stallholders to trade inside your site boundaries. In recent weeks, we have noticed an increase in the number of stallholders trading beyond their stall boundaries. Stall frontages are delineated by the yellow dots on the pavers. If you are unsure where this is, check with the market supervisor on the day. Stallholders are reminded that trading outside of site boundaries is not permitted at Salamanca Market. The effect of stallholders pushing into these public spaces can cause unnecessary congestion in an already crowded market. Sign boards, flags, clothing racks, tables and general product displays appear to be the main issues. Market crew will be checking this in the coming weeks and will follow up with stallholders. The purpose of this check is to help create safe passage through the market for our visitors, particularly for those with prams or using wheelchairs or mobility scooters. This also applies to stallholders located on the end of aisles that are pushing into public spaces. Above A pair of vintage chicken salt and pepper shakers.
