Hello  ACORNS subscriber

We are delighted to announce that registration is now open for the 10th World Summit on Arts and Culture, set to take place in Seoul, Republic of Korea, from 27-30 May 2025. The Summit will bring together key leaders and decision-makers from the arts and cultural ecosystem and beyond to discuss the theme, Charting the Future of Arts and Culture. The Summit will mark a significant milestone leading up to the UNESCO World Conference on Cultural Policies and Sustainable Development – MONDIACULT 2025 and efforts to ensure culture finds a place as a standalone goal in the post-2030 agenda for sustainable development. You can find more information about registration in English, Spanish and Korean and we look forward to seeing you there! We would also like to thank all those who submitted applications for the Call for Participation for the 10th World Summit on Arts and Culture and we will be in touch over the next few months.

In our global news roundup, new cultural policy developments have been highlighted including in Nigeria, where the Federal Ministry of Art, Culture, and Creative Economy launched a committee to review Nigeria's National Cultural Policy, tasked with addressing policy gaps, establishing a robust governance framework, and aligning with both regional and global standards. The Ministry of Culture in Brazil launched the guidelines for the National Policy for Creative Economy - Creative Brazil at the International Seminar on Policies for the Creative Economy: G20 + Ibero-America. And in a recent address, the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport in Bermuda highlighted plans to implement the National Cultural Heritage Policy that involves developing legislation, regulations, standards and guidelines for the protection and management of cultural heritage as well as establishing a National Heritage Council and a National Heritage Fund.

In the last month, creative economy and cultural industries have been in the news, where the Culture Secretary in the United Kingdom declared culture, media and sport sectors crucial to national growth mission and set out a vision for unlocking growth and opportunity in the UK’s £170 billion culture, media and sport sectors. Viet Nam is maximising the potential of cultural industries to boost GDP growth as the economy shows significant post pandemic growth and recovery. Tourism, advertising and the performing arts, among others, are expected to contribute eight per cent to the national GDP by 2035. And in Pakistan, dedicated units for Creative Industries and the Blue Economy have been established in the Ministry for Planning and Development to support a transformative step towards economic diversification and sustainable growth.

Mapping the cultural sector and cultural statistics are also in the news as the global consultation on the revision of the 2009 UNESCO Framework for Cultural Statistics drew to a close on 15 August. In India, the Ministry of Culture has initiated the National Mission on Cultural Mapping (NMCM). In the USA, a new interagency partnership between the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) and the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) will support the American Academy of Arts & Sciences’ Humanities Indicators project to assess the size and health of the nonprofit humanities, arts, and cultural sectors. And in New Zealand, Creative New Zealand launched New Zealanders and the Arts—Ko Aotearoa me ōna Toi 2023, a report that provides statistics on New Zealanders’ attendance, participation and attitudes towards the arts.

As the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games concluded this month, we close with an interesting initiative by the Ministry of Culture in France which provided 11,000 tickets to young people registered on the Culture Pass and affiliated with popular education and solidarity federations. This initiative, part of the Cultural Olympiad, sought to nurture dialogue between sport and culture as well as foster inclusivity by providing free access to major events for youth, particularly those less connected to cultural and national events.

As always, if you have any news or reports to share you can email us at info@ifacca.org.
