Dear Friend, 

Gratitude, ingenuity, flexibility, resilience, compassion, fatigue, humor, determination, enthusiasm, repeat! This describes the fall of 2023. At the beginning of every October, we know that we are about to embark on the busiest season of the year. We plan, prepare our partners, try to take a couple of breaks, and then with the energy of Yellowstone Falls, we go over the brink.

It is a ride that I have personally taken 13 times. Once we are in the flow it is literally a river of food drives, businesses providing their customers and employees with opportunities to give, and service clubs and schools all pitching in to make sure no one goes to bed hungry. In the same vein, there are volunteers pitching in with every aspect of collecting and distributing food. We logged nearly 3,000 hours of service in November and December, but know there were more involved, especially when we think of MSU’s Office of Student Engagement.

In this newsletter we are attempting to thank the many who helped provide nutritious food to our community members who need a little extra help. Many gave anonymously, so to those—and you know who you are—we are grateful. The outpouring of support helps shore up our food reserves as well as contributes about half of our operating budget all in an eight-week period. It is important in so many ways. Thank you for believing in how much our community matters and trusting us with this important work! Happy New Year, and please come visit us in our new home.

We moved to Market Place!

In December 2023 we moved into our new home! HRDC's Market Place houses our new lobby, store, warehouse, childhood and senior nutrition programs, and staff offices. It is also home to many other HRDC programs, including the Fork & Spoon pay-what-you-can restaurant, senior services, housing support, energy assistance, financial assistance, and youth support, among others. Donation Updates

We are excited to have a donation drop-off site at Market Place! It can be found on the south side of the building. If you would like to donate, just ring the doorbell to let us know you're here.

Our new donation hours are:
Monday - Thursday: 9 am - 4 pm
Friday: 9 am - 12 pm

Donations outside of these hours should be dropped off in our donation bins at most area grocery stores.

Volunteers Needed

We are looking for wonderful people to volunteer with us! Our biggest volunteer needs are:

• Afternoon Distribution Team (must attend Warehouse Team Orientation)
• Healthy KidsPack bag packing
• Senior Grocery drivers

HRDC Highlight

Gallatin Valley Food Bank is a program run by HRDC. HRDC is a nonprofit Community Action Agency serving Southwest Montana. HRDC has over forty programs across various service areas, including Blueprint Continuum.

In November 2015, HRDC opened Blueprint, a transitional housing program that provides youth-empowered, strengths-based, and solution-focused support to youth experiencing either homelessness or housing instability.

Of the 108 young adults served last fiscal year:

• 31% identified as BIPOC

• 7 were unaccompanied minors

• 8% identified as LGBTQ, though the true percentage is likely higher

• 57 identified as having a mental health disorder at entry; 31 identified as having a mental health disorder at exit

• 44% had experienced domestic violence

• 43% exited to positive housing destinations

Blueprint’s annual fundraising race, the BOAR (Blueprint Obstacle Adventure Race), supports and spreads awareness of youth experiencing homelessness in our community. It is an all levels, family-friendly, team oriented event with obstacles for all abilities. This year the BOAR will happen on August 17!
