COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENTThe ITHS Preclinical Engagement Program (PEP) is a new, free program which uses community engagement principles to match preclinical researchers with community members to serve as advisors on their studies. The goal is to bring the perspectives of patients and communities into
the early stages of research, ensuring research decisions are informed by the real-world experiences, needs, and priorities of those impacted by the health outcome being studied. BENEFITS OF PARTICIPATING - Integrate community perspectives into your preclinical research.
- Leverage insights from your community advisors to refine approaches and overcome implementation barriers.
- Forge meaningful connections to enhance your content expertise and align with evolving research
priorities.
- Utilize support from the PEP Coordinating Center to recruit your community advisors.
- Access PEP funding to compensate your community members for their contributions.
Please fill out our intake form to participate, or contact PEP Coordinator Sonia Bishop (skbishop@uw.edu) for more information.
A heartfelt congratulations to Dr. Kari Stephens on her new role as Vice Chair of Research at the University of Washington Department of Family Medicine! Dr. Stephens serves as an executive faculty member with the Institute of Translational Sciences’ Biomedical Informatics Core and the Community Engagement Core. In addition, she also serves as the ITHS Data Quest Director, overseeing a regional electronic health record systems based primary care data sharing network, which has supported over $100M in grant funded projects. Her work at ITHS highlights her commitment to fostering community research partnerships and bridging the gap between healthcare data and real-world impact.

Online Zoom EventThe R01 provides support for health-related research and development based on the mission of the NIH, and it is the most commonly used grant program for independent research projects. The experience of putting together your first R01 can be daunting, especially for New Investigators or Early-Career Investigators. In this session, Dr. Germán Gornalusse will share some tips on how to plan ahead for the application process and how to produce a clear, organized, and impactful R01 application. He will also share some lessons learned while becoming a New Investigator. Learn more & register >>

2025 Pilot Awards Now AvailableThe ITHS offers Catalyst Awards to provide “just-in-time” resources especially to
early career investigators looking to complete a project or collect pilot data for a larger grant application. The ITHS also offers Voucher Awards as “in-kind” service vouchers in support of outstanding translational research.
The Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H) was founded to bridge the gap between discovery and public benefit by supercharging development though significant financial and management support.
A new paper co-authored by ISE and CEE (Civil and Environmental Engineering) Professor Cynthia Chen demonstrates that local peer-to-peer (P2P) resource sharing has significant, untapped potential to bolster community resilience in the face of
disasters.
The Institute of Translational Health Sciences (ITHS) moves research from one phase of the translational science spectrum to the next, and helps others to do the same. From bench to bedside: we take great ideas and help turn them into reality with the aim of improving health outcomes across the spectrum.
