 June Newsletter

It's June 2018 and World Cup fever has taken hold of the UK. Many people watch the football competition but what about it's legacy of social value?

Sheffield Hallam SIRC, on behalf of London Sport, carried out a social return on investment (SROI) study into the social value of physical activity and sport in London. The SROI was estimated at £1.48 for every £1 invested in 2015/16, with forecasted returns for achieving their target of 1 million Londoners more active over the coming years. They have built a website which details the key findings of the study in an interactive way.

The World Cup has also been a reason for domestic violence in the UK to hit the headlines as 'warnings sent to high-risk individuals as research reveals levels of domestic abuse rise after England games, win or lose.' Read more about the Football Against Domestic Violence campaign.

Charlotte Österman from VINCI Facilities, on how SVUK training activated their social value journey

Charlotte Österman, Senior Sustainability Advisor at VINCI Facilities took Social Value UK's Social Value Practitioner (SROI) Training. Our training is designed to support you to respond to questions about social value in the procurement process and to embed the Social Value Principles into your organisation.

Charlotte says, “Don’t get too focused on finding the holy grail of a perfect system of measurement. The most important part is not the number at the end; it is what you do in the first place and how you design your efforts to have the most impact. That’s where Social Value UK has helped us the most.”

Social Value Portal announces a strong alignment between the Social Value Principles and the National Themes, Outcomes and Measures Framework

"We are happy to report that we have found a strong alignment between the Principles and the National TOMs. The starting point for the National TOMs Framework was extensive consultation with over 35 separate stakeholders over a period of 18 months including public, voluntary and private sector organisations that reflected the need to prioritise and report the delivery of social value through specific policy areas and 5 key themes."

Making social accounting relevant for you - with SVUK & Social Audit Network

On 20 September 2018, Social Value UK and the Social Audit Network are joining together to bring you a networking and learning event about social accounting.

Accounting for value is gaining impetus on the back of the Social Value Act and there's a huge amount of interest in social accounting becoming the way to describe social value. We will explore in this seminar how you could embed social accounting as a way to account for social value, both in your own role and for the benefit of your organisation.

Come along to hear, learn, and meet other people who are interested in proving, improving and being accountable for their social value. We have arranged for local organisations to tell you about what they are doing, invited some 'experts' from the world of social accounting, and will facilitate discussion aimed at helping you start your social value measurement journey.

Our friends at York St John University will host a networking lunch at 12.30pm in the Foyer to the De Grey Building to start us off, and share information about some of their exciting work around social impact.

1. Increase the capacity of actors in the impact economy to improve their value through efficient and effective impact management strategies.
2. Strengthen the impact community across Europe (and beyond).

Roadshow in Birmingham: Social impact accounting for faith-based organisations

Within the VCSE sector there is an ever-increasing need to account for the impact of projects, initiatives or the whole organisation. Faith-based organisations play a significant role in the sector but often their contribution and the good work they do goes unsung.

We hope this event will begin a conversation about the practicalities and good practice of impact accounting for a faith-based context regardless of organisation size. We would value the contribution of others who are not in faith-based projects but who work in partnership with them, to stimulate a grounded discussion and the sharing of experience and good practice principles.

Hosted by the Springfield Project join us on:

All social enterprises can apply, but there are additional categories that investors, corporate, private and public sector bodies can apply for.

This year there is a another new category, the Social Enterprise Stakeholder of the Year. The intention is to recognise all private and public sector organisations who support the sector, whether by including social enterprises in their supply chains, having a strategy in support of them or indeed by offering advice to the sector.
