National Ploughing Championships
On 16 September the next generation of farmers - our Form 6 Agricultural Science pupils - set off for the National Ploughing Championships 2025 at Screggan, County Offaly. It was a fantastic day out, packed with learning, fun, and plenty of mud! We explored countless informative stands, watched eye-opening demonstrations on farm health and safety, and, of course, enjoyed plenty of delicious food - the chicken burgers were definitely the highlight. Along the way, we gathered lots of "freebies" (including some WD-40, which will come in very handy for our new bike repair stand unveiled this week). At the Irish Farmers Journal stand, we even tried to squeeze the whole group into their photo booth! We visited a wide range of stands, including Teagasc (the farm advisory service), Bord Bia, and Origin Green, gaining insights into the vital work of these government-supported organisations. Among the favourite experiences were the drainage and Irish Army demonstrations, test-driving mini tractors and bobcats, learning about recycling initiatives at the Re-turn stand, and even picking up a new hurl. Mr Langrell guided us to several key exhibits linked directly to our Agricultural Science projects, such as the Teagasc stand and the 2025 Agricultural Innovation Tent. There, we saw the very latest developments aimed at boosting efficiency and sustainability for Irish farmers. We also learned more about the Government’s actions around food sustainability and agricultural policy. The many flyers and resources collected will be invaluable for our upcoming projects and examination preparations. All in all, the Ploughing Championships proved to be an inspiring, educational, and thoroughly enjoyable experience. Every pupil who attended came away with new knowledge, plenty of mud on their boots, a bag full of goodies, and a big smile. It’s safe to say that this trip has only strengthened our enthusiasm for Agricultural Science—and we’ll definitely be back at the Ploughing for many years to come!
International Tennis Success
We are delighted to share the recent sporting success of one of our pupils who has been making an impact on the tennis court. Over the past two weeks, Christopher Delaney competed in two international Tennis Europe Under-14 events held at the National Tennis Centre. These tournaments attract players of a very high standard and Christopher did exceptionally well - reaching the final of the doubles competition on both occasions. In addition, this weekend he will proudly represent The High School and Leinster in the Under-14 Interprovincials in Belfast. Balancing such a demanding training and competition schedule alongside schoolwork is no small feat, and we commend his commitment both on and off the court. We wish Christopher continued success in the sport and look forward to celebrating more achievements in the future! All Ireland Hockey Championship
The Senior 1 hockey team have qualified for the All-Ireland Schools (Boys) Championship by defeating Sandford Park School 2-1. Both goals were penalty strokes scored by captain Jason Robinson. They will be playing in the competition in Limerick on 22-24 October. We congratulate all members of the squad and wish them all the best with their preparations. Form 4 Guest Speaker
This week Form 4 pupils had a visit from a former pupil who completed the Tour de France route for charity. Coach and athlete Stephen Moody (HSD, 1986-92) shared how he completed the Tour de France cycle route to raise funds for cancer research. It was wonderful to have a past pupil return to discuss his life. Beyond cycling, he also swims, runs, and participates in triathlons. Following the presentation, he helped us in unveiling our new bicycle repair stand situated in the bicycle shed on the south wall of the grounds. We are thrilled to have this facility available for bike repairs on school premises. We want to thank Stephen for visiting and for sharing his life experiences with us.
Form 4 Geography
Form 4 Geography pupils have been investigating the origins of the ingredients in an average grocery shopping bag. They examined not only where the ingredients were sourced, but also where the items were processed or manufactured. Using this data, pupils created map summaries, calculated the food miles each product had travelled, and estimated the associated carbon emissions. What a fascinating project with important real-world lessons. Well done, everyone!
Form 5 English
It is not easy to part with a much loved book, but as part of Sustainability Week, pupils in Form 5 English did just that, taking part in a blind book swap - a creative way to recycle books while sharing a love of reading. Each pupil brought in a well-loved text, wrapped it up, and swapped it for a surprise book chosen by a classmate. The excitement of unwrapping a mystery title made the activity even more enjoyable, and pupils were delighted to discover new stories to read. It was a wonderful opportunity to give old books a new life, encourage sustainable habits, and celebrate the joy of reading.
Sustainability Competition
To mark the end of Sustainability Week, we are inviting pupils to take part in an exciting competition on the theme: “Speaking Truth to Power on Climate Change.” Participants can choose from a range of creative responses:
All entries should be submitted to Ms Hutchinson Edgar by Friday 10 October. This is a fantastic opportunity for pupils to use their voices
and talents to engage with one of the most urgent issues of our time. We look forward to seeing the creativity and passion shine through in your entries! Form 4 Garda Visit
On 22 September Form 4 pupils went to the Demonstration Theatre to attend a talk given by Gardaí from Terenure Garda Station. They spoke to us about illegal drug use and its dangers. The Gardaí explained how drugs are addictive and why we should steer clear of them, including alcohol. We are all very grateful for the Gardaí coming to our school to discuss drug use, its effects on us and our brains. Form 1 Geography
This week pupils in 1F Geography took part in a fun and imaginative competition to make or bake their very own volcanoes. From erupting Lego models to delicious edible creations, there was plenty of talent and creativity on display. The activity was a fantastic way to bring classroom learning to life — and a reminder that Geography can be both educational and tasty! Well done to everyone who took part.
Form 6 Chemistry
Our Form 6 pupils went all out for this year’s Organic Chemis-TEA Party, celebrating their hard work in chemistry with plenty of tea, cakes, and muffins - a perfect blend of science, fun, and community spirit. SNA Appreciation Day
On Special Needs Assistants Appreciation Day, let us seize this opportunity to celebrate and express our gratitude to our fantastic Special Needs Assistants for the amazing care, patience, and support they provide in our school every day. Their kindness, dedication, and hard work significantly impact the lives of our pupils, and we truly appreciate all that they do! Noticeboard News
