Yves T’Sjoen, professor in de moderne Nederlandse en de Afrikaanse literatuur aan de UGent, UStellenbosch en Karelsuniversiteit in Praag, belicht in Breyvier de zijpaden van het diepgaandere onderzoek uit zijn parallelle academische uitgave - dat handelt over intercultureel verkeer tussen het Afrikaans en het Nederlands en in het bijzonder over Breyten Breytenbach en de Lage Landen.

Tropentag 2023: Competing pathways for equitable food systems transformation: trade-offs and synergies - call for abstracts deadline: 3/5/2023

The annual interdisciplinary conference on research in tropical and subtropical agriculture, natural resource management and rural development (Tropentag) is jointly organised by the universities of Berlin, Bonn, Göttingen, Hohenheim, Kassel-Witzenhausen, ZALF e.V. (all Germany), Ghent University (Belgium), Czech University of Life Sciences Prague (Czech Republic), BOKU Vienna (Austria), and the Council for Tropical and Subtropical Research (ATSAF e.V) in co-operation with the GIZ Fund International Agricultural Research (FIA).

Tropentag 2023 invites a debate on competing pathways for food systems transformation, drawing from diverse perspectives, disciplines and methodologies.

G-STIC Climate Action Programme - priority for projects with Morocco - info session: 16/5/2023

In 2023, the Government of Flanders provides subsidies for a project call through the G-STIC Climate Action Programme. This call will fund demonstration, dissemination & capacity building projects that are carried out in developing countries and in which a Flemish organization takes the lead.

Projects in collaboration with Morocco will be prioritized.

An info session about the Project Call 2023 will take place in Brussels on 16 May.

Symposium at the University of Amsterdam: Establishing Europe-Africa academic collaborations - 1/6/2023

At this innovative symposium about effective ways to develop and strengthen institutional connections with the Global South, the AUGent Africa Platform has been invited to share its experiences.

We will discuss Advantages, Difficulties, Examples, and New Opportunities with respect to partnering with African institutions.

Workshop: Controlling the conversation: Finding and amplifying your voice through the noise - 6/6/2023
 

Using examples from the media, this session will focus on the framings and tactics used to harass and manipulate under the guise of The Truth with a focus on ‘colonial’ language and views.

Dr Tiffany Williams is a visiting lecturer of Discourse Analysis at the Ghent University Department of Political Science, and a postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Jena Institute for Caucasus Studies.

Yearly Competitions Royal Academy for Overseas Sciences (RAOS) - with some questions highly relevant for researchers on Africa

In order to stimulate high-quality scientific research regarding problems inherent to overseas regions, the Royal Academy for Overseas Sciences (RAOS) organizes yearly competitions.

Each award-winning work in the yearly competition is granted a cash prize (2,500 EUR).

Questions for the Competition 2024

  • First question. — An original study is requested on the current transformations, within an overseas community, of the social practices in relation to the environment.
  • 2nd question. — A study of traditional sustainable irrigation systems in overseas semi-arid and arid regions is requested.
  • 3rd question. — A scientific and/or technical study is requested on sustainable circular economy models in emerging countries based on one or more successful examples

Questions for the Competition 2025

  • First question. — A study is requested on the judicial system in an African or Asian colony in the first half of the 20th century.
  • 2nd question. — A study is requested on the impact of climate change on the productivity of tropical lakes and on the management of these aquatic resources by the local population.
  • 3rd question. — A study is requested on the lessons learned so far in emerging countries on the first concrete achievements of the Sustainable Development Goals.

Launch of the new AEGIS website!

Last month, AEGIS – Europe’s dynamic association of African Studies – had launched its brand-new website. 

With a completely new interface and many new features, the site provides important updated information about:

  • almost 40 AEGIS institutional members;
  • 10 thematic Collaborative Research Groups;
  • key African Studies events such as the European Conference on African Studies (ECAS) and AEGIS PhD Summer School as well as other significant news and opportunities;
  • the AEGIS-Brill African Studies book series and a range of other relevant publications;
  • and the spectrum of teaching in African Studies across Europe.

Participation in the Belgian trade visit to Senegal - please reach out to us in case you cannot join, but are still interested in academic collaboration with Senegal

From 21-26 May, Ghent University's Rector and a number of professors will participate in the Belgian Economic Mission to the Republic of Senegal presided by HRH Princess Astrid of Belgium, Representative of His Majesty the King.

Active research collaboration with Senegalese partners will be explored, in particular with Cheikh Anta Diop University in Dakar.

GAPSYM16: Knowledge production, research ethics and authorship in African contexts - deadline to submit abstracts extended to 1/6/2023
 

This 16th multi-disciplinary conference of the AUGent Africa Platform will be co-organized by the University of the Western Cape. It hopes to showcase how scientists, policy makers, engineers, artists, writers, opinion makers and educators reflect on the highly topical subject of knowledge production and authorship in Africa.

This conference will explicitly be a platform to engage on this topic, also beyond the academia, including the organization of writeshops, round tables and seminars to rethink existing paradigms on the position African research takes in scholarly production.
