Message from iGEM Headquarters

Thank you to all teams who joined our Ambassadors in video calls at the end of March. All of your feedback and insight is absolutely invaluable to our planning. We know that teams have a lot of questions and concerns about the future. With your feedback, we are working hard in the background to make sure that teams can still do iGEM in 2020, and that the experience will be worth it, so keep an eye out for announcements from us in the coming weeks!

iGEM HQ and your Ambassadors are here for you and we hope to continue taking calls to hear from you throughout this Competition season. We want to know what we can do to keep you going. If you missed the first round of calls, you can always contact us (hq AT igem DOT org), or your ambassadors (after [AT] igem [DOT] org) to schedule a call.

Keep scrolling to see what's new in the iGEM community this month.

Equip yourself to talk about iGEM! Download slide library, and more...

Whether you are an iGEMer fundraising for your iGEM project, an iGEM alum raising awareness of iGEM, or an iGEM committee member, you are invited to visit our new resources page on iGEM.org. These are resources that you can pull from when creating presentations about iGEM.

Here you will find a general overview of the iGEM Competition, Giant Jamboree, a brief history of iGEM and a series of project examples in the theme of 'local people solving local problems' and 'tackling global challenges'. We also showcase iGEM's work beyond the competition, highlighting the efforts of iGEM's committees, the success of iGEM startups and After iGEM's work in championing synthetic biology.

Share your expertise - New iGEM Committee

Application call for the Video & Remote Technology Committee has been extended!

While remote participation has taken on a large role in today's world, we see an opportunity to technologically advance iGEM and make it accessible to everyone. It feels natural to start bringing plans, originally intended for 2021, to reality even sooner. The VRT Committee will be working on solutions for a remote iGEM participation everywhere and a digital modernization of the competition and the Giant Jamboree.

Are you interested in helping bring this new reality to the iGEM Competition? We are looking for members with passion, skills, or experience in:

  • Remote & Virtual technology,
  • Video Filming & Editing,
  • Science Communication,
  • Art & Science.

Committee work will begin this month, while applications are open on a rolling basis - application check-in point is every Saturday.

Apply before next Saturday (April 11th) at:

Safety and Human Practices

New rules and guidelines for iGEM teams in the context of COVID-19

The COVID-19 pandemic will undoubtedly affect iGEM 2020 projects. Some teams may even want to respond to COVID-19 using the tools of synthetic biology. Regardless of your project choice, we want to caution that this public health crisis poses some special challenges for iGEM teams. We have created new Safety and Human Practices guidelines for teams conducting iGEM projects during this COVID-19 pandemic.
