Hi there Welcome to the March Newsletter! Hi there, Welcome to the Love Windermere March newsletter As we move into spring, this issue brings a fresh wave of insight, research, and community stories from across the catchment. From national policy to on‑the‑ground action, the work to protect Windermere continues to gather pace. We’re featuring our progress update on our first 3 months delivery of our Action Plan, DEFRA’s new water white paper, marking World Water Day, welcoming international scientists to the catchment, and sharing practical guidance on greener boating. You’ll also find details of our 2026 drop‑ins and updates from our partners. Together, these pieces show how collaboration, science, and everyday choices all play a role in shaping a healthier future for Windermere.
Taking action to improve water quality The last three months has shown that collaboration, teamwork and accountability are key to ensuring we are successful as everyone has a role to play in making Windermere a healthy, thriving place for future generations. A new vision for waterDefra’s 2026 White Paper outlines a major overhaul of the UK water sector. Key reforms include creating a single regulator, adopting long-term investment cycles, and strengthening pollution enforcement. It prioritises infrastructure resilience, consumer protection, and cleaner rivers. From Chile to CumbriaWhen Valentina Escanilla Jaramillo and Pablo Etcharren Ulloa travelled from Chile to Windermere, they didn’t just bring data, reports, and research findings; they brought a powerful story of care, commitment, and hope for one of their country’s most treasured lakes, Lake Villarrica. World Water DayOn World Water Day, we’re reminded of the vital role lakes like Windermere play in sustaining communities, wildlife, and our planet. Every drop counts, and for Windermere, every action matters. Come and say hello at our monthly drop‑insWe’re hosting drop‑in sessions across 2026, giving you the chance to meet the Love Windermere partners, ask questions, raise issues, and discover the actions we’re taking to protect and improve the catchment. Greener boating on WindermereWindermere is the jewel of the Lake District—a place where boating, wildlife, and community come together. But with thousands of visitors and boat users each year, the lake faces growing pressures. Pollution, invasive species, and habitat disturbance can all harm its delicate ecosystem. Local Development Order introduced for septic tank upgradesThe replacement of ageing septic tanks with modern treatment plants, which discharge lower levels of nutrients, is now permitted in the Windermere catchment without the need for a planning application. This will help to encourage safer, cleaner sewage treatment at domestic properties. Celebrating women in science protecting WindermereThis International Women’s Day, we shone a spotlight on the incredible women driving environmental science and conservation across the Love Windermere partnership. Their work is vital to safeguarding the health of our lake and inspiring future generations to care for the natural world.
How partnership and collaboration can deliver real change The Love Windermere Partnership works on the principle that lasting change is only possible when campaigners, the water industry, and partners can unite around a common goal. Pulling together, rather than pulling apart, is how we are tackling the complex challenges facing Windermere.
