Hi, my name is Jenny and I manage the Halifax College Team. Alongside Tammy and Larry (College Administrators), Danny (College Wellbeing Officer), Natasha (College Life Coordinator) and Matt and Hannah (College Life Advisors), we work together to make sure that every student in Halifax is welcomed to their new community and is able to make the most of their time at University.

We understand that coming to university can sometimes feel a little bit daunting, but your college team is here for you every step of the way.

We have organised an induction and a number of online activities in advance of your arrival, so that you have an opportunity to get to know the college team, your committee, STYCs, STYMs and other college members to find out about what it will be like when you arrive.

Take a look at our website, our official Facebook and Instagram pages to find out more and see what’s planned.

Freshers Week: Unfortunately, a number of fake pages and social media accounts attempt to target incoming students each year. Please be aware that the only University-endorsed events are those offered by our Student Unions (YUSU and GSA).

Online induction

Completing the online induction is a great place to start your university journey. York prides itself on being a community built on respect, and this induction explains more about the community you will be joining and our values. It is packed with useful information and resources to support you through your first few weeks.

Arrivals information (if living on campus)

New undergraduate students living on campus will move into Halifax on Sunday 25 September. Your nearest campus car park will be Halifax College Car Park, which can be found using animal.dragon.jams via the What3Words app.

Our accommodation team will contact you by email to arrange a time to arrive, so please keep an eye on your University account. Please make sure you book your time slot as it helps our team manage the number of students arriving on campus and helps us to support you as you move in!

Students will not be able to access University accommodation until their confirmed contract start date in their accommodation offer. Please ensure you plan to arrive on or after this date.

If you have an additional support need, or exceptional circumstances that will require you to arrive early, please contact our student support team and accommodation team to discuss earlier access.

Once you’ve arrived, there will be planned welcome events and activities to meet other new students. You will also have the opportunity to join campus and city tours.

International students - travel advice

Free airport collections from Manchester Airport will be available for students on Friday 23 September and Saturday 24 September, but must be booked in advance.

If you are arriving into the UK via another airport, or by another mode of transport, further advice can be found on our travelling to York pages. For more information about planning your journey, what to do upon arrival, as well as our getting ready checklist, please see our International Students Welcome to York guide.

If you have any questions, queries or problems relating to your travel arrangements, please contact the University’s International support team.

Family and Supporter talk

On Tuesday 13 September at 6pm BST we will be hosting an online welcome talk for families and supporters. This will be an opportunity for the people who care about you to ask questions and meet college staff. Please share the below link with any parents, carers, guardians, relatives or other supporters who might be interested in joining the talk.

If a family member or supporter contacts us on your behalf, please be aware we won’t be able to speak to them about you until we’ve received written permission from you first.
