Prayer Teaching

Listening Prayers

Sara Jukes

We spend most of our prayer time talking to God, but for prayer to be a significant bedrock in our daily walk with Him and to help build that relationship, it is so important for it to be two-way. Listening prayer is effective and essential as a part of this.

Spend time listening to God, be quiet in an ever-busy and noisy world, and in this stillness we will find peace. In the stillness the still, small voice of calm comes. In the stillness God speaks; guiding, convicting, healing, reassuring and challenging. As we listen, God will speak; it may not be an audible voice but through an impression, an image, a reminder or a nod towards a bible verse.

The Psalms repeatedly encourage us to be still and listen.

“Be still and know that I am God.” Psalm 46:10

“Meditate within your heart on your bed, and be still.” Psalm 4:4

Praying and listening creates a holistic relationship, so let’s spend some time listening this week; believing that the King of Kings and Lord of Lords wants to speak with you.

Practical / Prayer Steps

  1. Sit somewhere you feel safe, somewhere you like to go. It could be somewhere outside or a indoor space with a comfortable armchair
  2. Then say: "God I’m listening, what do you want to say to me?"
  3. Wait
  4. He may not speak specifically, but sitting in His presence is just as rewarding. If you do get something specific, journal it.
