January 2025

Dear colleague,

Welcome to this latest edition of the Friends of SACPA newsletter. Our members newsletter details all the new guidance, reports, research and resources we have curated over the last month.

The safeguarding world has certainly been on the political agenda lately with much debate about implementation of IICSA recommendations as well as the ongoing implementation of the Online Safety Act.

It looks likely that after a very long wait some of the IICSA recommendations, including mandatory reporting may make their way into upcoming legislation.  Of course, effective implementation backed by the necessary resourcing of statutory agencies will be one of the important factors in making any recommendation work in practice.  It would be good to see things shift for victims and potential victims though.

Likewise, a call for another independent inquiry into groups who sexually exploit children has been the subject of debate with an announcement last Friday that funding will be released for a swift inquiry, but not of the kind that may compel witnesses to give evidence.  Sacpa will be keeping an eye on the learning from this rapid inquiry process and supporting members in considering how any outcomes may be implemented.  Whilst the new inquiry commences refreshing ourselves on the learning from Child sexual exploitation by organised networks investigation report published in February 2022 may be helpful.

SACPA turns 5!

This month marks the 5th anniversary of SACPA. In this time we've remained at the forefront of promoting best practices, raising awareness, lobbying for meaningful change, and driving innovation in safeguarding and child protection.
