Message from the CEO

I am delighted to reveal that tomorrow, MTPConnect is opening Expressions of Interest for funding under the Targeted Translation Research Accelerator (TTRA) Drugs and Devices program.

It is open to Australian spin-outs, start-ups and small to medium enterprises keen to commercialise innovative medical products to reduce the burden of cardiovascular disease and the complications of diabetes (type 1 and type 2).

EOIs need to be submitted by 4 November 2024 and companies can apply for up to $1.5 million. Detailed Funding Guidelines with further information about eligibility and the application process are already available for review on the MTPConnect website.

We know that access to funding remains the biggest challenge for startups and innovators at the early stage of innovation so this new accelerator opportunity - and prospect of much needed investment - will make a real difference.

This time next week we’ll be preparing to take a 20-strong delegation on MTPConnect’s North America medtech mission, visiting the ‘Medical Alley’ global medtech hub of Minneapolis-St Paul, Minnesota and the MedTech Conference (15 - 17 October 2024) in Toronto, Canada. With standout companies joining us and a cracking visit and networking program, along with a prominent Team Australia pavilion at the Medtech Conference, the mission is all about opening-up new market, commercial, investment and collaboration opportunities in North America.

For any life science companies keen to access US investment and collaboration, can I suggest a listen to this month’s MTPConnect Podcast episode featuring Biocom California’s Joe Panetta who provides an invitation to their Investor Conference in La Jolla, California in early 2025 as well as some insightful tips for doing business in the US.

In other international activities, MTPConnect’s Andrew Bowskill, co-chair of AAMRNet, has just returned from New York City where he was involved in a myriad of activities and side meetings around the United Nations General Assembly High-Level Meeting on Antimicrobial Resistance, one of the most significant weeks in AMR policy for many years. The meeting delivered a potent political declaration, committing to new targets and actions, including reducing the estimated 4.95 million human deaths associated with bacterial AMR annually by 10 per cent by 2030.

Through our MoU with the Korea Health Industry Development Institute (KHIDI), we are welcoming a Korean biotech delegation to Melbourne and Sydney at the end of October, organising site tours in conjunction with Austrade and hosting a special networking lunch jointly with BioNSW in Sydney on 29 October 2024 and another special networking event in Melbourne on 30 October 2024. Please register to join us in Sydney and stay tuned for details on the Melbourne event.

Back home and we announced we are partnering with AusBiotech to deliver Australia’s first National Biotech and Medtech Development and Commercialisation Summit, to be held in Canberra on 19 November 2024.

Our sector is facing challenges on many fronts - supply chains for medicines are vulnerable, sovereign capabilities remain limited and access to capital and people with the right skills is needed to grow our companies. The summit is the first time ever our industry has come together to tackle these issues with a crystalized voice to government about how Australia can supercharge the “D” in its medical R&D strategies and I couldn’t be more pleased to see MTPConnect and AusBiotech coming together to make it happen.

And coming up next month, look out for some great events we are involved with including the SABRE Futures Summit 2024 in Adelaide on 16 October 2024 which invites experts across multi-sectors to shape the future of national security through biotechnology; the Tenmile Healthtech Muster Networking event in Sydney on 17 October; and our next WA MTP Sector Spotlight featuring Agili8’s Esther Oh in Perth on 15 October.

We are also holding an invitation-only Clinical Translation and Commercialisation Medtech  Symposium in Sydney on 21-22 October where we will welcome innovators in this medtech cohort for two days of commercialisation skill building through a series of workshops with sector experts.

And a reminder about another program we are involved in delivering, the Australian Clinical Entrepreneur Program, which is supporting the development and growth of clinician-led companies. Applications for nurses, doctors and allied health professionals to participate in the program in NSW and Victoria are open until Friday this week, 4 October.

In staff news, we are excited to welcome three new team members to our Adelaide team to work with Dana Bell and Jess Maxwell - Dr Nathalie Taquet joins as Business Development Director SA, Dr Santhni Subramaniam as Industry Development Officer and Belinda Turner joins as Engagement and Communications Manager.

With so much happening in the sector over the next few months, we hope you continue to enjoy our newsletter and stay connected to opportunities, events and news.

Kind regards,

Stuart Dignam
Chief Executive Officer

    Case Study Showcase

Case Study Showcase | Internship Program Builds Clinical Trial Workforce and Supports Regions

More than 90,000 Australians participated in clinical trials in 2022. That same year, the nation spent $1.6 billion on clinical trials, around 1,850 trials commenced and the sector employed 8,000 skilled workers. Multiple reports, including MTPConnect’s Australian Clinical Trials Sector reports and REDI Skills Gap Analysis reports have identified workforce shortages in this sector. The rapid growth of the medical technology, biotechnology and pharmaceuticals sector is causing serious shortages of skilled workers, especially in clinical trial operations and pharmaceutical manufacturing. The VCCC Alliance SKILLED Internship program is building a future workforce to support the growth of clinical trials in cancer and non-cancer research through support from the REDI initiative. Find out more...
