A big end of Year wrap up! With Dr Alex Maxwell, President of BSLMDear Members of the British Society of Lifestyle Medicine, As we stand on the threshold of 2024, one can’t help but reflect on the year that has passed – a year marked by significant achievements, some challenges, and a steadfast commitment to Lifestyle Medicine. Firstly, I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to my colleagues and the entire team at BSLM (https://bslm.org.uk/about/meet-the-team/). Your hard work, dedication, and unwavering support are the backbone of our society's achievements. Further gratitude must be extended to our Advisory Board members whose vision, dedication, and expertise have proven invaluable in advocating for how the BSLM can best advocate for Lifestyle Medicine and serve its members. The year 2023 has been a very positive one for our society, highlighted by the great success of our annual conference. This event, along with numerous regional conferences and local meetups, demonstrated the passion, power, and high-quality evidence behind the Lifestyle Medicine movement in the UK. I found it incredibly inspiring and am still buoyed by the people I met, the stories I heard, and of course the Cèilidh dancing! Our next annual conference in Newcastle’s ‘The Glasshouse’ on the 19th-21st of September 2024 is already looking to be another highlight on the Lifestyle Medicine calendar and we’d love to see you there. The BSLM’s excellent ‘Core Accreditation in Lifestyle Medicine’ (https://bslm.org.uk/core-accreditation/) was launched in Spring 2023 and already has over 300 people working through its high-quality, evidence-based, and practically useful content. Our ‘Learning Academy’ (https://bslm.org.uk/learning-academy/) has some incredibly exciting new courses and content to come in 2024 so watch this space! Our membership has seen significant growth, now encompassing around 2,500 dedicated healthcare professionals and we are very proud that we have strong representation from many of the multidisciplinary team with a focus of ours being to continue to equalise this representation in our membership. Just as importantly, engagement is at an all-time high. This expansion is a clear indicator of the continuing and increasing interest and recognition of Lifestyle Medicine's vital role in healthcare. I want to express my profound gratitude to all our members for your incredible achievements and unwavering dedication. The diverse and inspiring examples of Lifestyle Medicine in practice, which can be seen at https://bslm.org.uk/lifestyle-medicine-in-practice/), reflect just a small part of our community's collective effort and passion. A particular challenge we have consistently heard from our membership is how difficult it can be to embed and practise Lifestyle Medicine within the NHS. We have responded by intensifying our support for members in many ways. Some examples include providing resources, webinars, workshops, sharing best practises, and the recruitment of a ‘Transformation Lead’ in Dr Rupa Joshi whose focus is to support you as our members in integrating Lifestyle Medicine into your practise and the NHS. Looking forward to 2024, we are filled with anticipation for what there is to come. With our Journal continuing to contribute to the furthering of Lifestyle Medicine science, our Learning Academy cementing its position as the primary Lifestyle Medicine education platform in the UK, and our events and resources providing opportunities for professional and personal development we are confident 2024 will be our best yet. As the festive season unfolds, I am reminded that this time of year is synonymous with family, connection, and reflection. I hope this season provides you with the opportunity to rejuvenate and connect with your loved ones, celebrating the joy and peace that come with togetherness. I warmly invite each of you to ponder how you might contribute your unique skills and passion to the BSLM in 2024. Your ideas, experiences, and expertise are the lifeblood of our society, and we eagerly await your contributions and suggestions. Please do not hesitate to reach out to us with your thoughts at office@bslm.org.uk. Wishing you all a festive season brimming with laughter, love, and indulgence as you see fit. Here's to a New Year filled with health, happiness, and your and BSLM’s continued success! World of WalkingWe're aligning with the work they do.Recently we've made connections with World of Walking as we believe they're doing great work through their activities, foster a great approach and ethos. So what is World of Walking all about? We'll let them explain: "World Walking. Inspired in Inverclyde. Clyde-built in Glasgow. Simply to Motivate. World Walking is chuffed to bits to have aligned with the British Society of Lifestyle Medicine. Having celebrated our 10th birthday in October, what better way to begin our second decade of doing the best we can with what we have to promote health and wellbeing. Our mission We are a small, volunteer-led Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation based in Greenock on the south bank of the beautiful River Clyde some 20 miles or so west of Glasgow. Despite our diminutive size and meagre resources, our unashamedly global mission is to help combat the negative impact on physical and mental well-being caused by physical inactivity, one of the leading causes of premature death in Scotland and around the world. We aim to achieve this by curating interactive and informative virtual health walks on our free World Walking online platform to encourage people to take part in an activity that benefits their health and improves their quality of life. Our World Walking website/app World Walking is bespoke, easy to use and free for anyone to use anywhere, anytime. Our simple idea was used, initially, to help motivate the members of a Phase IV cardiac rehabilitation exercise group at Inverclyde Leisure’s Waterfront Leisure Complex to remain active between their weekly gym classes. In February 2008, armed with only a map, a box of pedometers (no website back then and we’d never heard of an app!), the group which became known as the Inverclyde Globetrotters, set off to walk virtually round the world to highlight the importance and benefits of cardiac rehabilitation. After 117 weeks on the road, the group ‘arrived back’ in Greenock in May 2010 to complete their epic, global, virtual health walk having clocked up 30,688 miles. Little did the Inverclyde Globetrotters know when they took their first steps that 238,855 miles and 11 years, 3 months and 10 days later their ‘travels’ would see them ‘landing softly’ on the Moon on 14 May 2019 in nice time to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Neil Armstrong’s Apollo 11 Moonwalk in 1969. Their journey, perhaps the longest health walk in history, was to take them through over 100 countries around the world and across every continent, all without ever leaving Inverclyde! Along the way, World Walking was born. How World Walking works Designed and developed in Glasgow by a talented digital design studio in Glasgow, World Walking works by allowing people to use the steps/miles they walk each day to complete virtual walks to some of the most amazing and best loved places on Earth. Currently, we offer more than 450 virtual walks of varying lengths to suit all levels of abilities. Since 2013, over 216,000 user accounts have been created on World Walking by people in over 100 countries and in all 50 U.S. states. Thousands of groups of all types have tackled our virtual walks, including families and friends, the NHS, community groups, health groups, schools, colleges, universities, churches, charities and workplaces. To date, our amazing community of world walkers has clocked up over 141 billion steps (60 million miles/97 million kilometres) and completed over 86,000 virtual walks. In case you are trying to wrap your head around just how far that is, it’s like walking over 2,400 times round the world or further than from Earth to Mercury. World Walking came about simply because a small group of people with heart health issues went for a walk and that is what is great about walking; you don’t always know where you’ll end up, what you’ll find round the next bend or who you’ll meet along the way but one thing is for sure, you’ll feel the better for it. User Feedback Over the years we have received much positive feedback from our users. Here are a few examples: "I've lost 25 kg thanks to this app and my friends from the group battling with depression never felt better. I talk about your app to whoever cares to listen :)" “World Walking has been wonderful! The engagement from the students, parents and staff has been amazing. Especially when motivation has been difficult with lockdown! It has been a game changer!” “It's been a lovely way to stay connected while we can't meet up in person and a great way of keeping my parents active and getting them out and about. Thanks for creating such a great thing." “I just want to thank you for this awesome app and initiative. I sincerely hope you will keep this app free and going. It is so amazing and I just love doing my run or my walk every day in order to add my steps to my walk. Thank you." "You guys are great! I love this app - it is so cool and a great learning tool. Walking and learning is awesome." “World Walking is a way of life now." "I stumbled upon World Walking quite by accident and loved it immediately. After reaching out to World Walking, The 100 Mile Club® embraced it wholeheartedly. What a spectacular way to get moving and learn about our world! The World Walking App and website have been so much fun for our kids and schools who have discovered the magic of touring the globe while journeying to 100 miles. Its simplicity and ease of integration into curricula make it relevant to all ages. Thank you World Walking for an incredible, worldwide partnership. We think you are amazing!" -Kara Lubin, Founder, The 100 Mile Club (USA)" We can't wait to work alongside this wonderful fellow charity in the future! Mind Over MountainsA little update from them!Mind Over Mountains is a pioneering UK charity, and partner of BSLM, that believes time spent outdoors, combined with mindfulness and effective coaching and counselling - during a guided hike - is the most powerful intervention to build resilience and maintain good mental health and wellbeing. They are active advocates for nature-based therapies and the benefits of green social prescribing. For 2024 Mind Over Mountains are delighted to share that all their day walks will be completely free of charge - funded by a number of generous partners - and open to anyone over 18 who would benefit from the opportunity to walk, talk and truly be heard. The charity supports people with diagnosed mental health conditions, as well as any one of us who experiences the day to day overwhelm and anxieties that build up in our lives. We all need that chance to ’step off’ and accept some support at times, and to spend some time out in nature (in some stunning locations!), achieving a wonderful day’s walking with a likeminded group of people. "I would say the walk was a catalyst for hope and personal growth in me. I think the lasting impact is more than you can imagine for one walk. I don’t think I’ve ever been part of such an accepting, non-judgemental community, or been in such a non-judgemental space, especially around mental health.” - Mind Over Mountains participant. All the walks and retreats for 2024 are listed on the Mind Over Mountains website here https://mindovermountains.org.uk/events - why not start your 2024 by getting involved, or sharing these amazing opportunities with your clients & networks.
