MONTHLY MERIT

UNC Charlotte Recommits to Climate Action

UNC Charlotte's newest leader, Chancellor Sharon L. Gaber, recently reaffirmed the institution's commitment to climate action by re-signing the Carbon Commitment; one of the three Presidents' Climate Leadership Commitments.

The Carbon Commitment was first signed in 2009, by then Chancellor Philip L. Dubois.  We are excited to continue working with, and offering support to, UNC Charlotte in regard to their climate goals.

Welcome (back) to the Climate Leadership Network!

NOTABLE NEWS

Thank You for Joining Us at the June Milestone!

Thank you to everyone who joined us for the Climate Action Pursuit June Milestone!  We hope that you agree that it was two days (June 10th-11th) of productive and interactive conversations and planning focused on advancing climate action and climate justice.

June Milestone Wrap-Up
We are actively working to get the June Milestone session recordings up in Sched so that you have access to them.  If you registered for the Pursuit, even if you were unable to join us in June, you will still be able to view the recordings.

To access a session recording:

1. Log into your Sched account.
2. Go to the Sched session page you would like to view the recording for.
3. Click on the yellow "Video Stream" button towards the bottom of the page.
Note: if you only see the yellow "Open Zoom" button on the session page, that means that the recording is not yet available, so be sure to check back!

Looking Ahead to October
The next Pursuit Milestone will be in October (October 7th-8th), and we need your input!  Help us build upon the year-long momentum and climate action.  Here's how:

1. If you attended the June Milestone and have not done so already, please complete the very short survey here.  Your candid feedback is vital and will help us with planning for October.

2. Submit a session proposal for the October Milestone!  While we're not currently actively reviewing October session proposals at this time, you can submit an idea at anytime for when we are reviewing submitted proposals.  You can submit your proposal here.

OPPORTUNITIES

Advocacy: America Is All In Hill Day for Climate Action
July 12th-14th

America Is All In, which we are a part of, as are many of you, is hosting a virtual "on the Hill" advocacy opportunity in mid-July.  As Congressional leaders continue to debate and negotiate the infrastructure plan, it's crucial that climate solutions are included.  One way we can ensure this happens, is to have members of Congress hear from cross-sector leaders; including from the higher education sector.  We all know that time is of the essence when it comes to climate change.  Here's an opportunity to take climate action in a way that could have an effect for years to come.

Note: your institution does not need to be a part of America Is All In to participate.

Highlight Your Climate Work!

Second Nature Anecdotes: a new storytelling page!

In case you missed it, last month we introduced you to the Second Nature Anecdotes page which is another mechanism we're offering for you to highlight the incredible climate and sustainability work you are doing on your campuses in your own words!

We already received and published the first submission - the University of Illinois at Chicago highlighting their Arbor Day celebration and Tree Campus recognition!

Some other examples of potential content for the Anecdotes page:

  • Your institution achieved carbon neutrality - celebrate this major accomplishment while also talking about how you got it done.
  • Your college/university is working with a local community on a climate project - talk about the project, provide photos, tell the story.
  • Your institution is incorporating racial justice into your climate action plan - talk about how and why.

Your institution has climate stories, and we want to hear them!  Here's how it works:

  1. Pull together the content you would like to submit to us for consideration of posting on the Anecdotes page.  This means, your write-up/story, photos (optional), your logo, and all content being requested on the submission page.
  2. Submit it via the submission page!
  3. We will review your submission, and let you know either way if we will be posting it to the Anecdotes page.

Note: This opportunity is currently only available to Climate Leadership Network signatories, University Climate Change Coalition (UC3) members, and our partners.  If you have any questions, please contact Amanda Belles (abelles@secondnature.org).
