NEW PERSPECTIVES INSPIRE HOPE

“In the case of good books, the point is not to see how many of them you can get through, but rather how many can get through to you—how many you can make your own.” –Mortimer J. Adler

UNEXPECTED INFLUENCERS

Just before Labor Day, my colleague Michele and I were discussing the new school year and books, and she asked, “Which books have influenced your views about health most powerfully?”

Michele was familiar with what I playfully call “my reading hobby.”  There are three establishments in my community where the staff know me by name: the farmers market, where I purchase produce year round; the health food store, where I find quality pantry staples and body-care products; and the public library, where more often than not, even when I’m not searching for them, books that challenge my thinking and radically alter my views find me.

After a brief pause, I shared three titles that quickly came to mind: Scott Peltin and Jogi Rippel’s Sink, Float, or Swim; Joel Fuhrman’s Super Immunity; and William Davis’ Undoctored.

Michele asked, “So how did they shape your views?”

I replied that the authors had shared unconventional perspectives that led me to realize new and helpful insights. For example:

  • Sink, Float, or Swim affirms our capacity to attain greater health in the future and maintain it over time, even with aging.
  • Super Immunity explains the mechanisms by which nutrient-rich foods build strong immune systems and cure disease and marvelously validates the power we acquire by consuming nutrient-rich fruits and vegetables in abundance.
  • Cardiologist William Davis describes how his health declined after he adopted the “heart healthy” recommendations promoted by his own profession, making it crystal clear that we must go beyond conventional medicine and find better guidance and methods if we want to attain high health.

As I gained these insights, I realized that wellness programs can provide greater value by changing their objective from preventing disease to increasing overall health and well-being. That’s when the direction of my work was radically altered.

POWERFUL VIEWS SPARK NEW PERSPECTIVES

In contrast to conventional thinking about health as something that declines, each of these books highlights our potential for increasing health over time and offers an approach for doing so.

Although these ideas were captivating, over the years I have come to understand that a more comprehensive, systematic, and diverse methodology is required in order for large numbers of us to attain the potentials they articulate. The books validated several hunches that I held in the back of my mind, enabling me to articulate new ways of seeing health and to find and create effective methods for attaining it.

NEW PERSPECTIVES INSPIRE HOPE

Having highly qualified authors promote new and positive visions for health is gratifying and inspires hope.

Our subsequent challenge, though, is to bring these visions to fruition. By combining stimulating ideas with inspiring leaders, effective methods, and a community of like-minded others, the High Health Network provides a viable path to success. Anyone can follow this path. Contact us to find out how.
