Florida Magazine Association Summer 2023 Member NewsletterA Note from the FMA PresidentDear Members, Happy 70th Anniversary to the FMA! How fortunate we are to have an association of industry professionals in the publishing sector that started in 1953 in the state of Florida. The publishing industry has certainly changed since then and has evolved with the times. The FMA has also evolved and continues to strive to serve our membership’s needs. I am thrilled to report that we had another record-breaking year with Charlie Award entries. Congratulations to all the finalists! I look forward to meeting you all at this year’s conference, July 20-21. Visit the conference website for more information. This month, we are continuing with our “Coffee Chat” series and — for this second installment — are pleased to announce Catherine Walters, publisher of Orlando magazine, as our speaker for a session titled, “Sponsored Content: A Magazine Case Study.” Click here to register for the event. We hope you are using your membership to the fullest, and I encourage you to join our FMA Facebook group. The FMA Member Forum page is a place for members to share ideas, ask questions, and seek advice from each other. If you have any questions, please contact John Sotomayor, one of our forum page administrators, at john@sotomayormedia.com. Finally, I would like to thank all of you for your support during the past two years. It has been an absolute pleasure to serve as your president. I have learned immensely from the FMA Board of Directors and from the FMA members. I look forward to continuously supporting the FMA and helping where I can with furthering the mission of the FMA to “promote excellence and the standing of magazines in the Florida publishing industry” … and “to be the forum for networking, education, recognition, and advocacy for Florida’s magazine industry.” Here's to 70 more years of the FMA! ![]() Karla Monterrosa-Yancey ASSOCIATION NEWS & EVENTSCalling for Volunteers — Join an FMA Committee in 2023 Interested in furthering the magazine industry in the state, while gaining valuable leadership experience? Join a Florida Magazine Association committee! The Florida Magazine Association is always looking for interested professionals — and aspiring editorial executives — to join our board. And what better way to do so than by volunteering on one of our many committees. We are currently accepting applications for interested FMA members to join one of our committees — Nominating, Marketing & Membership, Contest, Newsletter, Scholarship, and Conference & Webinar. “Committee members are the heart of FMA,” says FMA President Karla Monterrosa-Yancey. “Our committee members assist us with many vital activities, including the Charlie Awards program, serving as judges for our Doug Damerst Scholarship, and promoting our social presence.” Founded in 1953, FMA’s mission is to create a community of publishing professionals that help promote the excellence and standing of magazines in the state. “Our members represent the gamut of magazines in Florida and so do our committee and board members,” adds Monterrosa-Yancey. “We are always looking for interest editors, writers and publishers to join our committees and help us move our association forward.” If you are interested in becoming a committee member, please email Karen Tower at ktower@flpress.com and indicate your top two committee choices.
FMA Member Forum The Florida Magazine Association has launched a new group page on Facebook for members to come together. The FMA Member Forum page is meant as a discussion page for members to share ideas, as well as a place for members to ask questions of other members, such as asking for advice or tips. The page already has more than 20 members. It is set to private, so only FMA members are encouraged to join, but set to visible, so FMA members can find it without being invited and can request to become members. You can help us grow the group page membership by inviting others to join. As an FMA member, once you join the group page, you can invite members of your magazine teams to join, be they creatives (editors, designers, photographers, writers) or business agents (publisher, sales, administration, or other). You can also invite other FMA member publications to join using the Facebook invite function. It is important to note that the Facebook invite function only allows you to invite others who are networked to your Facebook personal page. If you are not personally connected to your magazine team on Facebook or to other FMA member publications, you can still invite them by sending them an email with a link to the page. If you have any questions, please contact the FMA Member Forum page administrator and creator, John Sotomayor, at john@sotomayormedia.com.
