SWOOPING SEASON
Avoid areas with swooping birds
Spring is in the air and so too are swooping birds. If you've been swooped or have come across swooping magpies, please visit the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning's swooping map to submit your experience.
Tips to avoid being swooped:
-
Know your local swooping hotspots
-
Avoid the area
-
Move quickly, but do not run
-
Cover your head with a hat, helmet or umbrella and consider drawing a pair of ‘eyes’ on the back of your hat or helmet
-
Do not harass or feed wildlife
All Victorian native wildlife is protected by law, and it is illegal to harass or harm native birds and other wildlife without authorisation.
Swooping birds can be frightening. However, not all birds swoop to protect their eggs and young during the breeding season, so don't be concerned simply because there are magpies or other common swooping birds in the area.
You can make a report about problematic birds in Council parks using our Report It tool.
