As part of our commitment to First Nations Science, MTPConnect and the Lowitja Institute have released a discussion paper to help guide design of research funding programs that will benefit Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health and wellbeing. The paper is based on the needs assessment and prioritisation work conducted for the third funding round of MTPConnect’s Targeted Translation Research Accelerator (TTRA) program which targets solutions for diabetes and cardiovascular disease in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander
peoples. ‘Targeted Translation Research Accelerator Needs Assessment and Prioritisation Project’ provides a framework for how Indigenous-led priority setting can inform important funding decisions. We thank Lowitja Institute for working with us to develop this important resource for heath research and help elevate First
Nations science. With the release of the 2023 Federal Budget earlier this month, we welcomed the Government’s commitment to establish a new Industry Growth Program to power development of priority sectors, including medtech, biotech and pharma. The $392.4 million initiative, through the Department of Industry, Science and Resources, has the potential to turbocharge the commercialisation journey of medical science start-ups and SMEs, supporting their growth into tomorrow’s larger companies playing on the world stage
– and employing more Australians. It’s a welcome commitment to the potential of our sector. We know that industry connections and on-the-ground insights are a key commercialisation success factor. It’s why we were so pleased to bring to Australia, Medical Alley Association of Minnesota’s Frank Jaskulke, an expert in medical technology commercialisation and US market entry. Minnesota is one of the biggest medtech clusters in the world and our relationship with Frank and the Medical Alley organisation is all about making the right connections for Australian medtech companies and start-ups seeking to access the US market. During a whirlwind visit across the country,
Frank was able to connect with companies and stakeholders in Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney and participate in various activities for our Clinical Translation and Commercialisation Medtech program. Boston beckons, or more accurately the 2023 Biotechnology Innovation Organisation (BIO) International Convention which is such a critical event for making the right international connections. Our Chair, Hon Jaala Pulford, will be hosting a series of special events to connect companies and innovators with international partners
and funding opportunities - the Accelerating Australian Innovation Symposium and Australian Global VIP Business and Networking Reception on 4 June, and the Australian Women in Life Sciences Leadership forum, in partnership with Sanofi, on 5 June. You will find us at the Team Australia Pavilion, which we are supporting in partnership with AusBiotech, Austrade, CSIRO and state governments. And we’re planning to bring you a wrap up in a series of podcast episodes in the coming months. Recently, we took part in Australia’s delegation to BioKorea to cement South Korean trade and investment connections. I was delighted to announce a new REDI Fellow - Dr Alex Smith from the University of Queensland - has been selected to travel to Seoul to work and learn with Cytiva, a global leader in life sciences. Back home, it has been a busy month for Australian companies and researchers developing medical products and innovations. During May we were delighted to support a number of key events in Adelaide including participating in AusBiotech’s
AusMedtech conference and the SA Medtech Showcase and Innovation Precinct Tours with the Department for Trade and Investment, ANDHealth's Digital Health Summit, the SA Insights Series with Fertilis and the first REDI Fellowship Alumni networking event. We saw presentations from our chair and many of our team at these important sector events. Congratulations to AusBiotech on the success of this year’s AusMedtech event – and my thanks to Jo Close and the Adelaide Intermediary Program for all their work in making
the week so successful for the attendees from across Australia. Take some time to listen to new podcast episodes published this month about CSIRO spin-out Cardihab’s commercialisation journey with the ANDHealth+ Program and a wrap up of the SABRE Alliance workshop held in March that brought together industry, science and researchers to help tackle Defence’s most pressing needs. Finally, I would like to acknowledge Sue MacLeman, who finished up with MTPConnect earlier this month. Sue has been with us from day one as CEO and then Chair. She has made an incredible contribution to this organisation and our sector – she is committed to STEM and supporting women in leadership and we are thankful to have had the opportunity to work so closely with her. On behalf of our team and Board, I wish Sue all the best as she continues to make a
difference in this sector through her many directorships and advisory commitments. We look forward to connecting with you through our latest news, sector events, international delegations and many more opportunities outlined here every month! Kind regards, Stuart Dignam

Case Study Showcase | BMTH: 3D-printed Implants Creating Better Outcomes for a Common Wrist InjuryA pioneering technique, developed by Griffith Centre of Biomedical and Rehabilitation Engineering (GCORE), that designs personalised bone-ligament-bone grafts using 3D-printed biocompatible scaffolds is set to create positive results for people afflicted with a scapholunate interosseous ligament (SLIL) injury
– the most common of wrist ligament injuries. The SLIL joins the scaphoid and lunate bones, which are bones critical to normal movement of the wrist. The overall incidence of wrist trauma is reported to be approximately 70 out of 10,000 individuals and many of these cases involve rupture of the SLIL. The SLIL rupture is particularly prevalent in athletic populations, with men of an average age of 40 years at elevated risk of this injury. Read more about how the Griffith Centre of Biomedical and Rehabilitation Engineering (GCORE), in close collaboration with clinical orthopaedics and regenerative medicine partners (WA-based Orthocell), sought to develop a world-first robust technology to address this unmet clinical need.
