CHILDREN AND COVID
Information for parents, carers
In the first 12 months of the COVID-19 pandemic in Australia, children and young people were at a low-risk for getting and spreading the virus or becoming seriously ill from it.
The Delta variant of COVID-19 presents a higher risk to children and young people (0-19 years) making up to 22% of cases in Victoria in 2021.
Children and young people are far more likely to catch or spread the COVID-19 Delta variant, leading to a heightened risk of passing the virus onto older family members.
As children under 12 can’t be vaccinated against COVID-19 yet, it's important for parents, older siblings and educators to get vaccinated to help keep them safe.
The state government has launched a new webpage to provide information and resources about COVID-19 for parents, guardians, carers and young people.

TOWN ENTRY BOOST
Funding win for Kilmore, Seymour
Council has secured funding for new town entry signs in Kilmore and ventilation and insulation in the Kings Park exhibition building in Seymour through the Federal Government’s Building Better Regions Fund this month.
The fund will contribute $121,000 towards the estimated $242,000 Kilmore town entry sign project project, with design concepts endorsed through the Kilmore rejuvenation project.
The signs reflect Kilmore's historic identity and complement the Kilmore banner motif, Sydney Street precinct signs and heritage style street furniture which will be introduced as part of the Kilmore rejuvenation project.
The fund will also contribute $37,500 for the installation of a ventilation and insulation system in the Kings Park exhibition building.

ROADWORKS ON HUME
Motorists advised to detour
The Hume Freeway Melbourne-bound will be reduced to one lane through Beveridge for three weeks from Sunday 17 October while important upgrade works take place.
Motorists should allow up to 20 minutes extra for their journey due to estimated delays at the construction site.
Delays can be minimised by leaving the Hume Freeway at the Wandong or Wallan exit ramps and using Epping-Kilmore Road, Merriang Road and Donnybrook Road to return to the freeway.
Heavy vehicles are advised to remain on the Hume Freeway and allow extra time to travel through the work site.
Works are weather-dependent, so dates and times may change.

Start the conversation
$15 million was lost on poker machines in Mitchell Shire in 2019-2020. Even during 2020-2021, when the shire was locked down for months, more than $12 million was lost on pokies.
October 18 to 24 is Gambling Harm Awareness Week and the theme for 2021 is Talk. Share. Support. During Gambling Harm Awareness Week, people are encouraged to talk about the harms associated with gambling and the effects they can have on communities, families, friends, workplaces and individuals.

GO BIRD COUNTING
Think you know your sparrows from your swallows and your rosellas from your ravens?
Why not get out into nature, learn about wildlife in your area and contribute to Australia’s largest citizen science project by taking part in Birdlife Australia’s Aussie Backyard Bird Count this week (18-24 October).
Last year in Mitchell Shire, 168 observers participated in the bird count with over 10,000 birds spotted and 131 different bird species recorded.
To get involved, simply spend 20 minutes outside, anywhere you can count birds. Record what birds you see and submit the data to the Aussie Backyard Bird Count app or website.

SENIORS FITNESS
Outdoor fitness parks for seniors
Council is creating seniors outdoor fitness parks at The Elms Reserve in Kilmore and Chittick Park in Seymour and would like community input.
The seniors fitness stations will support older residents’ physical health, wellbeing, independence and sense of social and community connection.
This $300,000 project is made possible through $200,000 funding from Sport and Recreation Victoria’s new Facilities for Active Seniors Fund and $100,000 from Council.

SILVAN CLOSE, WALLAN
Provide input on street name
We're proposing to rename Silvan Close in Wallan to Park Close.
The street name 'Silvan' has been used twice within the Wallara Waters area of Wallan. Silvan Close is on the northern boundary of Merri Creek Park and Silvan Street is in the south-western corner of the estate.
To avoid confusion, Council would like to rename one of these roads. As Silvan Close does not have any properties addressed to it, changing the name of this road will have the least amount of impact on the community.
Closing: 9am, Monday 8 November
