SPOTLIGHT ON EQUITABLE COMMUNITY BUILDING WITH ITHS

Researchers at the University of Washington School of Public Health (SPH) and the ITHS developed a program called Community Voices to improve partnerships between researchers and community partners. The program provides a hub for matching community groups with researchers and provides support and coaching for how to be collaborative and inclusive from start to finish. This excellent profile, from the UW School of Public Health, profiles work done by ITHS leaders Linda Ko, Laurie Hassell, and Maggie Ramirez.

RADIANT: Enhancing Diversity in Cancer Clinical Trials

ITHS, in collaboration with the Andy Hill Cancer Research Endowment CARE Fund, is proud to announce the RADIANT program. This initiative addresses a critical area of need in oncology research: the lack of diversity among participants of cancer clinical trials. Initiated in September 2023, the RADIANT program will continue until Fall 2025.

REQUEST FOR IDEAS

Thank you to everyone who submitted proposals for the ITHS Request for Ideas. The  projects reviewed were very impressive and the decision-making process was not easy. Notifications for the final group of selectees will be going out soon.

Major points of emphasis included unique strengths or challenges in the WWAMI region, and a focus on translational science, not strictly translational research.

The selected project will be included in UM1 grant submission in 2025, receiving potential direct costs between $125,000 – $500,000 per year for 2-3 years.

WITH THE TRANSLATIONAL SCIENCE ENTREPRENEURSHIP PROGRAM

Making the jump from research to the real-world can be daunting – but not if you have the right tools & training. Enter the Translational Science Entrepreneurship Program (TSEP), a new entrepreneurship-focused training program designed to bridge the gap between scientific discovery and real-world application. The primary objective of this program is to accelerate the translation of scientific and technological innovations into practical clinical use, and the program is accepting applications until April 5, 2024.

KL2 PROGRAM

LOOKING TO THE FUTURE FOR KL2 PROGRAM

The ITHS interview series is meant to shine a deserving spotlight on individuals who are doing critical work across the vast spectrum of translational science. In this case, we are shining the light on our brilliant KL2 Multidisciplinary Clinical Research Career Development program, as well as the leaders who have made this program so successful. The timing is perfect, as Christy McKinney, PhD, MPH steps in as the lead as co-director, as John Amory, MD, MPH, MSc, takes on the role of Principal Investigator at ITHS. Dr. McKinney has a clear vision for the program's growth, saying:

With a substantial pool of applicants across all six schools, there is a clear demand for the KL2 program. We need to nurture a pipeline of skilled translational investigators, and this program plays a crucial role in ensuring their development.

We sat down with both Dr. McKinney and Dr. Amory to discuss what's next for this remarkable program.
