Happy Hallowe'en

Pupils in Forms 1 and 2 who study Home Economics have been busy preparing for Hallowe'en, carving pumpkins into jack-o-lanterns, baking fairycakes with a decidedly scary theme, and engaging imaginatively with produce like at no other time of the year.  We hope that our pupils' creations bring the fun of the season home with them as they prepare for the first half term of the year.  Happy Hallowe'en, everyone!

Form 3 Excursion

On Tuesday, Form 3 pupils had the opportunity to visit Avondale House and Forest Park, a Coillte run park on the grounds of the birthplace of Charles Stewart Parnell with a strong focus on sustainability, biodiversity, and reforestation.  We left for Avondale at 9.00 am on buses, dressed for the mixed weather, and arrived at around 10.30 am  We were then grouped by class and each group started a different activity.  These consisted of a treetop walk, a forest walk, and a display in the Coillte pavilion about the benefits of wood in construction.  Possibly the only disappointment of the trip was the fact that the thirty-eight-metre slide was shut due to the aforementioned weather.  However, the slide is mounted on a viewing platform connected to the treetop walk which was impressive in and of itself.  We left at roughly 2.45 pm and arrived back at school shortly before 4.00 pm.  I am very grateful to all those who were involved in arranging this trip and for giving us such a superb day out, especially our Form Teachers who accompanied us.

ADHD Flag

The High School Dublin was delighted to be recognised as an Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) friendly school by ADHD Ireland.  The ADHD School Accreditation Programme is a national initiative developed by ADHD Ireland to make each school in the country ADHD friendly.  The goal is to reach every school and bring the necessary knowledge and tools to make the educational journey more effective and positive for ADHD pupils, teachers, and families.  The programme includes

  • Pre and post programme meeting with school management and a school visit onsite /online
  • Up to five staff to become ADHD champions and participate in ADHD intensive training with Colin Foley from The ADHD Foundation, UK
  • Whole school staff training on ADHD providing awareness and accommodations
  • Parent/carer information sessions on ADHD which were offered to parents/guardians last year

The High School recently completed this accreditation and were delighted to receive our flag to mark this achievement.  As a school community we will continue to engage with ADHD Ireland and build awareness and acceptance through further training, information sharing, and engagement.

Senior Debating

This year members of Senior Debating team are taking part in the Concern secondary school debates.  Past pupil Nathan Hutchinson-Edgar (HSD, 2014-2020) was kind enough to pay us a visit at The High School to help us out with one of our assigned debate motions:  “Climate Activists must give up eating meat” .  Nathan is currently studying Environmental Science at third level.  We were fortunate enough to hear about some of the research currently happening in this area.  We should like to thank Nathan for his help and for taking the time to chat to us!

Cross Country

On 19 October twelve Form 1 pupils ran a Cross Country race in Marlay Park golf course. The race which was organised by Dundrum South Dublin Athletics Club was an inter-schools event so we met many participants from local area.  While the weather conditions were not ideal we all had a great time.  The six girls were in the first race, which was a kilometer, then the boys were in the third race which was the same length.  Although the race was tiring I would definitely do it again for the fun, exercise, and social element.

Volleyball Success

On 21 October the new High School volleyball team went to UCD to play the first game of the year. As there is a big squad we split into two teams playing one game each against Coláiste Eoin. The first High School team played very well producing a brilliant performance to win their match in just two sets. The second High School team then took to the court and just came up short in a closely matched game. The team is very grateful to those who organized the day and coached us throughout.
