GPCanShare: Cancer support program helping GPs help their patients

The cancer team staff at St Vincent's Hospital speak about the GPCanShare program.

GPCanShare is a popular service designed to help cancer patients and reduce waiting times for the transfer of clinical information for busy GPs and specialists. This program involves a Clinical Nurse Consultant (CNC) team with an overarching role of liaison and coordination between the hospital cancer centre and general practice.

The CNC team is highly specialised and all GPs in the CESPHN area with cancer patients can use the service. If you’re not using this timesaving service yet, contact the Cancer Management Project Officer, Lauren Walker l.walker@cesphn.com.au and a CNC will step in and assist with cancer patient management and administration.

The GP cancer support line is part of the GPCanShare service and also offers general cancer information and service and referral navigation advice. The phone line is available to GPs and practice nurses working in the CESPHN region from 8.00 am to 6.00 pm Monday to Friday including public holidays: Call 1800 475 463.

New research on introducing solid foods to babies before six months

New research has highlighted that unless medically advised, introducing solids in babies before six months is a predictor for fussy eating in childhood. Not introducing textured/lumpy foods by eight months is a further predictor for fussy eating behaviours.

Fussy eating is associated with family stress and conflict at mealtimes as well as high levels of parent concern and frustration. The consequences for the child's diet include poor dietary variety and a possible distortion of nutrient intakes, with low intakes of iron and zinc as well as dietary fibre, leading to constipation. There may be developmental difficulties in some children with persistent fussy eating.
