Message from the CEO

We are just back from MTPConnect’s North America medtech mission, with a standout group of Australian medtech start-ups, SMEs and organisations joining us in Minneapolis-St Paul and then in Toronto for a busy visit and networking program, along with a prominent Team Australia pavilion at The Medtech Conference.

We renewed our Memorandum of Understanding with influential Medical Alley headquartered in Minnesota while we were at The Medtech Conference. In discussions with Medical Alley President and CEO, Roberta Dressen, we agreed to continue working together on activities like providing introductions and in-market support, exchanging information on key issues and trends and supporting inbound and outbound missions. It’s a great connection for Australian SMEs in one of the world’s biggest medtech hubs.

Spending time with our medtech innovators it is clear how beneficial it can be to open doors to new market, commercial, investment and collaboration opportunities in North America. Forging new links at the Mayo Clinic, the University of Minnesota and beyond can really catapult a start-up’s development. Tune in to episode 183 of the MTPConnect Podcast to hear more from some of the delegates in our Medtech Matters special.

We wrapped up the mission visiting strategic partners in Washington DC – healthcare incubator @JLABS @ Washington, DC, the Australian Embassy and CSIRO, the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) and the Administration for Strategic Preparedness and Response (ASPR).

MTPConnect is also a long-standing supporter of ANDHealth's delegation to HLTH in Las Vegas US, an innovative conference held in October that provides digital health innovators an opportunity to gain insights on navigating the US market and international expansion. Dr Tracey Wilkinson, our Director Stakeholder Engagement WA at the WA Life Sciences Innovation Hub, joined the delegation to showcase WA’s digital health innovations.

Our international relationships are important, and through our MoU with the Korea Health Industry Development Institute (KHIDI), this week we welcomed a Korean biotech delegation to Melbourne and Sydney, hosting site visits and networking functions to help build more connections and drive collaboration between our two countries. We were honoured to spend time with KHIDI’s President Dr Cha, Soon-Do during this trip.

And yesterday, I was delighted to join AusBiotech’s CEO Rebekah Cassidy on stage at the AusBiotech 2024 conference in Melbourne to highlight why we are working together to deliver Australia’s first National Biotech and Medtech Development and Commercialisation Summit, to be held in Canberra on 19 November 2024. It's all about supercharging the 'D' in R&D! Medical science has been deemed a priority sector for the Australian economy, but that standing is not a given, so to ensure we keep it that way, it's important we come together to create a united voice for our sector – and that’s the focus of next month’s Summit.

In partnership with the Advanced Robotics for Manufacturing (ARM) Hub, we have just announced the three companies who have been selected to take part in the Biomedical AI Sprints Accelerator (BASA) – Cortical Dynamics, Microbio, and Resonait Medical Technologies!

In more good news this week, we are delighted to be partnering with the Victorian Chapter of the Association of Australian Medical Research Institutes (AAMRI VIC) and Swinburne University of Technology to deliver a new commercialisation training program for Victorian medical researchers.

The Victorian Minister for Jobs and Industry, the Hon. Natalie Hutchins MP, announced funding for the training under the Victorian Government’s Skills Solutions Partnerships program at a launch event at the WEHI.

During the month, the MTPConnect team have been leading and participating in a huge number of activities including the SABRE Futures Summit 2024 in Adelaide, a WA MTP Sector Spotlight featuring Agili8 in Perth, the NSW Drug Discovery Forum in Sydney and the Bridge Program Symposium in Melbourne.

Our Clinical Translation and Commercialisation Medtech Symposium was recently held in Sydney where we welcomed local innovators for two days of commercialisation skill building through a series of workshops with sector experts.

The next cohort of health professionals in NSW and Victoria have been selected to take part in the next Australian Clinical Entrepreneur Program, which kicks off in mid-November for a 12-month innovation program. We are delivering this initiative with the Australian Society for Medical Entrepreneurs and NSW Health.

And finally, Expressions of Interest for funding under our Targeted Translation Research Accelerator (TTRA) Drugs and Devices program close on Monday, 4 November 2024 at 4pm (AEDT). It is open to Australian spin-outs, start-ups and SMEs keen to commercialise innovative medical products to reduce the burden of cardiovascular disease and the complications of diabetes (type 1 and type 2).

As ever, an extremely busy and productive period and I really need to thank the amazing team at MTPConnect for everything they do to support the growth of Australia’s life sciences sector!

With so much happening in the sector over the next few months, we hope you continue to enjoy our newsletter and stay connected to opportunities, events and news.

Kind regards,

Stuart Dignam
Chief Executive Officer

Case Study Showcase | RNA Expert Works With SpeeDx to Develop New Diagnostic for STIs That Could Help Fight Antibiotic Resistance

Current molecular diagnostics tests are great at identifying microbes but not so good at working out which ones are actively causing an infection, or whether they are still active. SpeeDx is working on a program that could solve this dilemma and received a REDI Fellowship to bring Associate Professor Nham Tran on board to tap into his expertise in identifying pathogens through their RNA. During the Fellowship, A/Professor Tran from University of Technology Sydney (UTS) worked on the InSignia project – a newly developed diagnostic test for sexually transmitted infections for types of chlamydia and gonorrhoea. A/Professor Tran specialises in investigation of small RNA biomarkers within clinical contexts and the exploration of the role of small RNAs in various diseases. Find out more...
