![]() All of our news from the last few months![]() Project Work Update Restoring the River LevenBurn Mill Dam RemovalWe were live to celebrate the removal of the Burn Mill Dam on the River Leven. This event was co-organised by WFMF and WWF Netherlands, together with SEPA and Fife Coast and Countryside Trust. A special thank you to The Leven Programme for making all of this possible. This was a really interesting event to explain the process and answer questions about the dam removal and how it has impacted fish passage. Look out for Alison Wilson from cbec! ![]() Quharity Burn![]() The Quharity Burn ‘Stage 0’ restoration project is really taking shape! The implemented measures of our design have provided a more diverse river and floodplain environment, with large areas of wetland habitat benefitting a range of wildlife, as well as improving localised flow attenuation, flood water storage and water quality. Thanks to Chris Rogerson from CRC Environmental for the drone shots. ![]() Wear Estuary EnhancementsThe Wear Estuary is situated in the northeast of England, flowing through an industrial landscape before emptying into the North Sea at Sunderland. The majority of the intertidal zone estuary has been reclaimed over time, with concrete retaining walls lining the estuary margins to allow for urban development. This has resulted in the loss of important estuarine habitat, such as mudflats and saltmarsh. cbec were tasked with designing estuary enhancement schemes at three key locations within the Wear Estuary. In areas where saltmarsh was present (although in a state of decline), brushwood fencing was proposed to encourage accretion of fine sediment, which will allow the saltmarsh to expand over time. In locations where concrete walls lined the estuary edges, vertical habitat enhancements were designed to allow vegetation to colonise and ‘green’ the concrete. ![]() River ColeThe River Cole is an urban river that flows through the southwest of Birmingham. cbec were engaged to undertake a feasibility study for restoration options along a 12 km reach of the River Cole as it flows through Solihull and Coleshill. A range of restoration options were proposed with the aims of enhancing the rivers biodiversity as well as improving amenity value for local residents. Key urban issues were also addressed within the design options, such as reducing road run off entering the river by implementing wetland buffer strips. ![]() Allt LorgyWe won the UK River Prize for Reach-scale award for our work on the Allt Lorgy back in 2020 and thought we'd share some recent drone images taken by our Olly Smith of it's progress. It's looking fantastic, like a natural healthy river should, full of bends with plenty of life. We are always delighted to see our hard work come to fruition! Watch the RRC prize video here News ![]() New Team Members![]() Dr Grace Skirrow, PhD Grace specialises in fluvial geomorphology and paleoenvironmental reconstruction. Her PhD research studied the long-term dynamics of a river, once glacially-fed, in Patagonia and evaluated the environmental drivers that forced major changes in the river’s behaviour. Grace joins us as a Senior Consultant in Geomorphology. For more information about Grace please go here Ryan Adam, MSc Ryan has worked on various projects in New Zealand in the consulting industry which include several stream and wetland remediation projects, native species relocations, native fish habitat enhancements and barrier removal, ecological impact assessments and resource consent documentation, construction management, coastal enhancements as well as coordinating environmental components of flood recovery works. Ryan joins us as a Senior Project Manager. For more information about Ryan please go here ![]() Joseph Embleton, BEng Joseph is a recent graduate from Newcastle University where he studied Geospatial Surveying and Mapping (BEng). He is proficient in the use of total stations and GNSS equipment, which he developed through practical experience and field courses, solidifying and building upon his academic knowledge. Joseph joins our team as a Consultant Topographic Surveyor. We'd like to thank all those involved for another great event! Congratulations to the winners Thames 21 for the River Rom, Greater London, England - 'Rewilding the Rom'. This was our design and we are delighted for the project to receive such recognition. Watch a small sum up video of the event here ![]() ![]() Norway SurveyingOur team have been out to Norway to survey for more project work. The fieldwork comprised of topographic surveying of two sites, Mollenbekken in Stavanger and Roslandsana in Bryne. The detailed topographic surveys will be used to aid modelling and design, giving us a better understanding of how the systems function and respond during floods.
