Celebrating 500 years!

We are delighted to announce that Sedbergh School has been named European School of the Year 2025 at the prestigious StudyTravel Ltd Secondary School Awards. The recognition by peers and agent partners is a tremendous honour and a testament to the hard work and passion of the entire Sedbergh community. The win builds on a series of recent achievements for the School, including a nomination for an Education Investor award in March 2025, the Boarding Schools Association’s ‘Supporting International Boarders’ Award in 2023 and being named a World Leading Boarding School by Fortune in 2023.

Exam season is well underway, with our GCSE and A-level pupils working hard in preparation. Meanwhile, the beautiful weather has provided the perfect backdrop for girls' and boys' cricket fixtures and a full week of House Athletics, culminating in Saturday’s Sports Day finals. Senior events took place on Tuesday, juniors on Wednesday, and intermediates on Friday. Earlier in the week, we also celebrated the outstanding achievements of pupils in Years 9, 10, and 11 at a special Commendation Lunch. See our small picture gallery below to relive the week.

We are very much looking forward to welcoming families, guests, and Old Sedberghians to Sedbergh this Bank Holiday weekend as we come together to celebrate the school’s 500th anniversary. Timetable details for the weekend's events can now be found on our website.

History of Sedbergh School in 50 Objects #17: Sedbergh School Song Book

Sedbergh’s songs have great resonance with our community. Music became a passion of the School with the founding of a Musical Society in 1883. The Society met once a week, and though voluntary, included nearly every boy on the School roll. The words of ‘Winder’, now adopted as the Sedbergh School Song, were composed by Mr Frederic Blagden Malim (1907 – 11). ‘Winder’ is a celebration of the landscape that the School sits within, and the opportunities that it brings.

Grace talks to us about embracing new challenges to thrive in Senior School

Starting Senior School can be an exciting, yet nerve-wracking experience. For Grace, a Year 9 academic and drama scholar, it has been a journey of growth, opportunity and stepping outside her comfort zone. In this interview, Grace reflects on how the 11 plus Scholarship program at Sedbergh Prep helped her make the transition as well as how the Nine Star sessions have broadened her thinking. She also shares her pride in performances such as Chicago, her experiences in choir and orchestra, and the encouragement she has received from supportive teachers.

Fundraising Auctions

Sedbergh School is committed to raising funds to provide places for talented children who, because of severe financial barriers, would not normally have the chance to come to Sedbergh. A fully funded place could change the life of a child, but this is an opportunity that we can only give because of the generosity of the Sedbergh Community.

This weekend, over the May Gala Weekend, we are holding three auctions to raise the the funds we need to offer this life-changing place. You can view the auction brochures:

  • Silent auction
  • Friday live auction
  • Saturday live auction

Note: If you are coming to one of the Gala Dinners you will be able to bid on the day and there will also be a short live auction which will include the number 1 bottles of the Cautley and Calf casks of single malt whiskey laid down ten years ago.

If you are not attending a Gala Dinner you can still bid online as per the instructions.
