By supporting and guiding medical students and health professionals, NMF seeks to ensure every community across the country has access to quality health care. Despite recent efforts to expand educational options for medical and nursing students, there are not enough resources to train more clinicians in the U.S. to meet the nation's needs. Limited residency spots and faculty to complete training, as well as significantly reduced federal funding for direct graduate medical education, contribute to worsening health care professional shortages nationwide. Supporting and advocating for NMF programs and scholarships— including our Primary Care Leadership Program (PCLP)— makes a direct impact on these nationwide health professional shortages by empowering future generations of physicians and health care workers. . . . “Mission: I’m Possible” Gala Comes to Life in NYC
When we think of health excellence, we envision NMF scholars and alumni who may one day serve as the U.S. Surgeon General, win a Nobel Peace Prize, or discover a cure that changes the course of medicine. Why? Because NMF recognizes talent—and we’ve seen what’s possible through the more than 45,000 alumni we’ve empowered to date. The gala is over, but your opportunity to make a difference isn’t. There’s still time to take part in The Art Heist Auction— where every bid is an investment in art and the future of medicine. . . . Alumna Spotlight: Dr. Kamaria Coleman
Born in Memphis, Tennessee, Dr. Kamaria Coleman has long been an advocate for medically underserved populations and is passionate about improving musculoskeletal health and mobility for patients of all ages. A proud graduate of Xavier University of Louisiana—the nation’s only historically Black and Catholic university—she earned her degree in biology/pre-medicine with honors and went on to complete her medical training at Southern Illinois University. Now a third-year physical medicine and rehabilitation resident, Dr. Coleman continues to champion health excellence through her clinical work and research, presenting at national conferences and exploring a future in pediatric rehabilitation. . . . Awareness and Heritage in October This October, NMF recognizes Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Menopause Awareness Month, and Latine & Hispanic Heritage Month—three meaningful reminders of the many lived experiences and health journeys that shape our communities. The NMF community represents people of all ages, health backgrounds, and walks of life. These observances resonate across every segment of those we serve. Many of our alumni are actively engaged in work that impacts communities affected by breast cancer or menopause and celebrates the
contributions of Latine and Hispanic leaders in medicine. . . . The Fall Application for USMLE Fee Assistance Established in 2024 by the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME), this assistance award will provide $680 awards to 1,340 medical students who have registered and taken the USMLE Step 1 or Step 2 CK exam in 2025 to offset the cost of exam registration fees. . . . |
