Alicia and other county leaders—challenged by losing affordable housing units faster than they could produce them—were implementing a new “game-changing” approach. They created a monetary fund to purchase and preserve affordable housing units before they could be snatched-up by commercial developers. What a good idea, I thought as I read the article in our local newspaper. It reminded me that, just like preserving affordable housing, preserving health needs game-changing approaches to achieve success. LOSING HEALTH FASTER THAN WE GAIN ITLow energy, chronic pain, gastritis, and other ailments are reported on health care claims more now than in the past. While not life-threatening, these conditions are often a consequence of modern living’s health-depleting forces. Additional reasons for losing health include: our media-facilitated (though false) perception that declining health is our destiny; medical treatment that can make us less sick but not more well; and a stubborn focus on diet and exercise to the exclusion of necessary health-building efforts in the non-physical dimensions of well-being. In combination, these factors may cause us to lose health faster than we gain it. PRESERVING A RESOURCE IS FAR EASIER THAN RECREATING ITWhile we can’t make health-draining factors disappear, we can deter their effects, reduce losses, and reverse common trends by building our health. “It is far easier to preserve a resource than to recreate it,” said Wake County Commissioner Matt Calabria. “By protecting our existing affordable housing, we can…ensure affordable neighborhoods for generations.” Similarly, by protecting and increasing our existing good health, we can ensure its longevity. Pursuing a plan to gain health rather than lose it as we age is a game-changer. This strategy enables us to develop our ability to generate high energy from physical and non-physical dimensions of well-being, to resist common illnesses, to perform well in all of life’s demands, and to have little need for medical treatment. Having these attributes of high health yields long-term benefits and fosters a transformation in our personal attitudes about health from fear and uncertainty to confidence and control.
