Note from the RE:As you’re reading this, I will hopefully still be in one piece, albeit much dustier… I will have completed this year’s Rallycross school. I’m signed up for the first event on Sunday, so I’ll officially be a Rallycrosser after this weekend. It’s been a long haul with this crazy Subaru, and it took a village of fellow region members to help me get this car running, driving, and to stop smoking (well, mostly). I’m looking forward to this new adventure! And, the best part is, that means I get to race cars two weekends in a row! I am looking forward to seeing all of you, from both programs. With that in mind…it’s OFFICIAL…the season is starting! Keep it classy Susquehanna Season Opener Announcement Hi everyone! Spring is here, it's getting warmer and you know what that means! Autocross season is right around the corner. (I know it has already started for many of you as I've seen you out at events already this year, but this is for our friends that run Susquehanna events.) If you didn't already know, our season opener for Autocross is on Saturday April 30th. If you want to come out and join us, here is the link! Hope to see you all there! - Chris Brown DC National Event Recap: A First for Many, Fun for AllBy Jared McGahen As I sit here to write this recap, I can still feel the windburn on my face from a long weekend at Fedex Field in Washington, DC for the SCCA National Tour. Susquehanna was represented in tremendous fashion by 30 talented drivers. Starting with Super Street, my favorite Porsche Drivers Norm Flowers and Rick Newman represented in their cars taking 4th and 5th in class. Moving to BS, CJ Crawford in yet another Porsche, and Matt Skelly in the best looking Supra on site took 7th and 9th respectively. BSL was represented by Tia Cover in the same purple Supra. And despite being nervous in her first national event, still performed incredibly well. In ES, Jason Harnish took his 2000 Mazda Miata to a solid 8th place in class. In the bloodbath of FS, our very own Jason Felty had his hands full against not only fast cars, but arguably the fastest driver on site. Going against national champion Sam Strano could certainly rattle any driver, but Jason wasn't fazed and managed to take the 4th trophy spot in class against an extremely loaded field. GS was represented by Jeff Slade's Focus ST being codriven by Alex Pankiw. Jeff was participating in his first national event and despite having an off first day, came back strong Sunday running a faster raw time than Alex. In the newest class Super Street Touring, Abe Rosengrant took home a solid 4th place in class in his Toyota Supra. Street Touring Hatch might as well have been Susquehanna Touring Hatch at this event. Eight total drivers were in class with three of them being Quinn Slonaker, Chris Brown, and Chris Hyde. I was personally in grid for this heat helping the teams with tire blankets as they all struggled to get heat in their tires being the first runs of the day. Day one ended with Quinn and Hyde being 0.6 off each other as Brown struggled with cones. On day two Quinn managed to close the gap to 0.2 to the AWD Subaru driven by Hyde but it wasn't enough to overtake him. Chris Hyde took first while Quinn took second by less than a second. On Brown's final run he had mechanical issues and ended up taking a respectable 3rd in class. Susquehanna took home the entire podium in STH. As we move away from the street tires and into Hoosiers, I'd like to remind everyone it was at best 50 degrees with a decent wind all weekend long. Tire blankets became a commodity. Eric Peachey was the lone Susquehanna driver in SSP in a stacked class. His V10 viper while being codriven was absolutely flying on course and got Eric a 3rd place podium finish. Super Street Modified had two of our favorite local drivers Rob Springer and Kenny Adam. Both Rob's K swapped MR2 and Kenny's V8 Miata were coming into today largely untested, as both cars had major work done over the winter. Neither driver had a codriver so keeping heat in their Hoosiers became a struggle for the entire weekend especially in a class with a few national champions. Rob took 7th in class with Kenny 0.2 behind him. Susquehanna Modified Front Wheel Drive had two more well recognized cars. Jesse Stahlman and Nick Bradenbaugh brought their Dragworks 1991 Honda Crx to battle Mark Hetrick's world's fastest Ford Contour. Mark actually drove his Contour to the race. He didn't tow it. On day one with cold tires, Nick managed to set a blistering time despite carrying a cone with him with Mark and Jesse close behind. On a colder Sunday, Nick yet again set the pace setting an insurmountable lead securing first place. Mark followed up in second with Jesse hitting a cone on his final run moving him to third. Yet another 1, 2, 3 finish for the region. I might be biased moving into the XP class, but dull moments were few and far between. If you recall last year, Justin Peachey's Corvette suffered engine failure at nationals and has been under the knife ever since. On Friday, Justin picked his car up from the shop and went straight to the race. The only miles driven on it were from the course to the hotel. A whopping two miles. Sporting a fresh new Hawk Performance wrap and being codriven with national champion Mike Casino. Jere Haigh and Geoff Wolpert brought down Joule, the yellow and blue Ultima GTR with an LS V8. Then came team Miata with Andrew Lobbs XB Miata and David Myer's Little Wimpy Puppy being codriven with Jared McGahen. On day one, there might have been as many people putting on tire blankets as there were drivers. A timing issue and a course change mid heat allowed 3 drivers to receive two extra runs. Cone penalties by Casino and Peachey were allowing Jared, Geoff, and David to stay in contention. But on the final run they each put a blistering gap on the field while Geoff and David cleaned up as well, with Jared, Jere and Andrew rounding out the field. A colder Sunday meant trouble for the Hoosiers. Only Casino and Jared managed clean first runs. But then the corvette started to do corvette things and blitzed the second and third runs with Justin narrowly missing first by 0.2 seconds. Geoff and David struggled with cones while Jared managed to run slower but cleaner allowing him to move into the third place and final trophy spot. Jere and Andrew took the final two spots. Derek and Dennis Latshaw brought their 2006 Mustang into CP against some extremely tough competition. Another class that was struggling for heat all weekend, Derek managed to hold onto a solid second place finish with Dennis taking 5th. Both drivers drove extremely well with only one cone hit between the two of them. And finally, Jason Winstel took his '71 Firebird into CAM-T. A usually loaded class locally, Jason took home second place for the weekend. It was an incredible weekend with unmatched levels of camaraderie and sportsmanship shown. And on behalf of all the Susquehanna members in attendance, a sincere thank you to the Washington DC SCCA and all the event organizers for putting on a fabulous weekend. Autocross Annual Tech Announcement Hello again everyone! Long time no talk. (JK!) In addition to our first event, we will be doing our annual tech on April 30th. This will be done by our Chief of Tech, Mark Hetrick on his off heats. If you see him, make sure to mention you would like to have your car annual teched. You may have a few questions, well I may have a few answers for you! You say: "Am I eligible?" I say: "Have you ran at least 10 events with us in the last 3 seasons, and don't drive a kart (sorry Ryan)? If so, then yes!" You say: "What do I need?" I say: "Print the form out the form attached and bring it with you to the event. We won't have any printed out there for you (Which is exactly why I will never do annual tech, I am a typical millennial without a printer) [Editor's note: printers are plebeian relics from when dinosaurs walked the earth] - Chris Brown April Regional MeetingWe’re going to begin rotating venues in 2022!
