Meet The New Staff

The new school year at The High School is off to a fantastic start. Pupils and staff are settling in well with extra-curricular activities already underway.  We bid farewell to Mr Irwin and Ms Horan on their retirement and thank them for their long service at The High School.  Ms Meeke resigned during the summer: we hope the future brings her happiness and success.  We wish Ms Forder, Ms Lyons, Mr Murphy, and Mr Whiteside well as they embark on career break.  We extend a warm welcome to our new staff: Ms Coleman (English), Mr Deane (Irish), Ms Driskell (Supervisor), Mr Hart (History), Ms Isikalu (IT), Ms Kirrane (Irish), Ms Mannion (Spanish and German), Mr O’Sullivan (Irish), Ms Teeling (Special Education), and Ms Wilson (Admissions Officer).  We are delighted to have them join The High School community.

Form 4 Excursion

On Monday Form 4 pupils set off on an expedition with half of the year group going to Killiney Beach and the rest going to Russborough House. This article will cover the visit to Killiney Beach.

At 9.00 am we gathered in front of the rugby pitches, waiting for the buses to take us to Killiney Hill.  We waited at a local shop in Ballybrack for everyone to arrive, where many of us bought snacks and drinks. Then, when everyone was ready, we began the walk to reach the obelisk and the beach.

Once we started walking towards the obelisk and the beach, we were in great spirits and having lots of fun. When we reached the obelisk at the top of the hill, it looked amazing. The view was stunning and after a short rest we proceeded down the hill towards the beach.

When we arrived at the beach it looked incredible. We all had lunch before beginning our swim. Nearly everyone got into the water, and we had loads of fun swimming and “chilling.” The water was freezing—it felt like we might get hypothermia! When we got out, the stones that hadn’t been a problem suddenly became treacherous, sticking into our feet like razor-sharp claws. After swimming, we relaxed on the beach, playing games, chatting, and enjoying ourselves.

After we finished we walked back to the buses—but thankfully we didn’t have to climb back up the hill again. When we reached the buses, we got on board and chatted during the journey back to school. Once we arrived, we were allowed to head home. Overall, it was an amazing experience and hopefully all the Transition Year Programme excursions will be like this one. A big thank you to all the teachers who accompanied us on a wonderful day out.

Senior Physics

In Form 6 Physics this week we studied electrical charges. We used a Van De Graaf generator to positively charge our bodies which caused our hair to stand on end.

The Sunflower

I Shine like the Sun

Flow in the Breeze

I am not an Oak

Nor am I a Leaf.

I stand Tall and Strong

But I may Falter at Dawn

The Sun shines brilliantly

As my Petals go on.

I captivate and Lure

With my Gold yellow Hues

I attract the Light

And strengthen at Bloom.

I am the Sunflower.

Junior Jigsaw Club

If you enjoy making puzzles then you are in for a treat. Ms Wiggle, our school librarian, has acquired a collection of wonderful jigsaws for the Junior Jigsaw club, which takes place each Thursday at lunchtime, 12.45-1.15pm. See you there!

Form 5 Agricultural Science

Sometimes studying STEM means getting your hands dirt  and this week Form 5 pupils studying Agricultural Science have been doing just that while exploring the physical characteristics of soil. They discovered how texture, colour, and moisture affect what can grow, and why healthy soil is essential for life.

International Hockey

Congratulations to High School teacher and Hockey Co-ordinator (Girls), Ms Jones, who this summer represented Ireland at the Women’s Over-45 World Masters Hockey European Championship in Valencia, Spain. Both Ireland’s Over-45 Men’s and Women’s teams reached their respective gold medal matches, with the women triumphing as European Champions. We are incredibly proud of Ms Jones, whose passion for fitness and sport continues to inspire everyone around her. Well done, Ms Jones!

Form 5 Art

Yes, it’s just the start of the year – and pupils in Ms Killane's Form 5 Art class have already been busy with some interesting charcoal exercises. Before they launch into their first big project, pupils have been exploring the art of negative space. The results, as you can see, are impressive. What a brilliant beginning to what promises to be a creative and inspiring year in the art room.
