Parents’ Evening and Prize Distribution

We held the annual Prize Distribution as part of a Covid-compliant ceremony this year which was live streamed for all those watching at home.  We were delighted
to have the opportunity to hear from the Dean of Waterford, the Very Revd Maria Jansson who spoke inspiringly about the gift of leadership that we all possess and the importance of female leadership in the modern world.  It was an excellent way to introduce the event which celebrated the youth and future generations of the school.  The High School's musical talent flourished in the pieces preformed by the orchestra and choir.  They gave the event an uplifting and celebratory tone.  The prizes were distributed to past and current pupils for their excellent achievements in their academic, sporting, and musical  endeavours.  We all join in congratulating them for their positive participation in our school.  Many thanks to everyone who helped make this such an enjoyable event for all concerned.

Irish Times Competition Winner

Congratulations to Tirzah Hutchinson Edgar who was one of the winners of the Irish Times "Dear World"  writing competition which asked Irish children to write to world leaders attending the 26th UN Climate Change Conference (COP 26)
outlining their hopes, fears, and solutions to the climate crisis and the action they want to see our leaders take.  Tirzah was one of seven winners from over 750 entrants in the secondary school category so we are very proud of her achievement.  You can read her article

Senior Play

All Together Now is a global event occurring from 11-13 November celebrating the return of musical theatre through a spectacular performance featuring songs from your favorite movies and musicals such as Les Misérables, Mamma Mia, and Fiddler on the Roof.  These songs will be performed by pupils in Forms 5 and 6 who have worked tirelessly over the past few months to create a once-in-a- lifetime experience for you.  It would be a pity to miss this unique opportunity to hear West End hits live on stage at The High School.  The tickets are on sale at lunch breaks outside The Reynolds Hall.  They cost €8 for pupils and €10 for adults.  All external attendees are required to comply with Covid-19 restrictions including providing contact details and evidence of a vaccination or recovery certificate as well as wearing a mask and observing social distancing throughout.

Form 1 Hockey Blitz Success

Form 1 hockey players went to Wesley College on Wednesday to play in a hockey blitz.  We all played our very hardest and produced excellent results.  We won four out of four matches, so it couldn't have gone any better.  We really enjoyed ourselves and are very proud of the teams.  We are looking forward to more success in the future.

Science Club

Do you have a passion for science?  Why not spend some extra time with your teachers each Thursday at lunchtime and enjoy fun science experiments at Science Club.  Before the Hallowe'en break we created Soda Snake Fireworks by mixing icing sugar, alcohol, and bicarbonate of soda in a mound of sand. There was great anticipation amongst the teachers and pupils and the reaction didn't disappoint as the images show.  All sorts of shapes and sizes emerged from little black balls at first which slowly grew in snake-shaped creations emitting heat, light, and in some cases a unique aroma!  All pupils from Forms 1 and 2 are welcome to join Science Club in C1.  Speak to your Science teacher for further details.

Hockey Milestone

We would like to congratulate High School past pupil and Olympian Shane O'Donohoe (HSD, 2008-11) who received his 200th international cap for Ireland recently in Wales at the European World Cup Qualifers.  It is important to mark this milestone in Shane's career and the history of hockey at The High School.  We wish Shane every success in the future.

New Menu Choices

We are delighted to announce the return of a healthy hot food provision on a takeaway basis for pupils.  Each day (except Wednesday) there will be an additional healthy hot meal option available for pupils alongside the current offering of fresh salad boxes and rolls.  On Tuesdays and Thursdays there will be delicious hot soup made on site from fresh, natural ingredients.  On Wednesdays a fresh roll or salad will be available in line with our status as a Health Promoting School.  Please note the standard process of pre-ordering is still in place.  Over the course of this academic year we will continue to implement changes to support our healthy eating policy.  We encourage all pupils to choose healthy eating choices where possible.  We are very lucky with the quality of the delicious fresh food that is continually produced by this dedicated catering team.  We wish to thank them for the taking such good care of us every day.

School Uniform

Uniform is worn at The High School to encourage a sense of community, pride, and identity.  It also has the advantage of removing undesirable competition in dress standards.  We look forward to your full co-operation in preserving and enhancing the public image of The High School by ensuring that the way pupils dress and behave as they travel between school and home is of the highest possible standard.  Full uniform (consisting only of items from the approved list) must be worn in accordance with the Uniform Code on the way to and from school as well as while in school. It is not acceptable for pupils to wear items
that are not on the approved list or to leave their uniform in school and change when they arrive.  Please see the recent email containing details of the HSD Uniform List and Uniform Code for information.
