We are reminded of the realities of the rise of drug resistant infections this month, following the release of a new report from MTPConnect and our Australian Antimicrobial Resistance Network (AAMRNet) highlighting the threat to human health posed by ‘superbugs’ and presenting recommendations to equip the Australian healthcare system to fight them. The report – Fighting superbugs: Ensuring Australia is ready to combat the rise of drug resistant infections – was launched during World Antimicrobial Awareness Week at the BioMelbourne Network’s Bioforum event. It makes clear that we are running out of effective antibiotics and fast approaching a post-antibiotic era where minor infections, currently easily treated with common antibiotics, may become deadly. It’s time to act, and the report’s nine evidence-based recommendations provide practical steps Australia can take to meet the AMR
challenge. The report was developed by specialist health advisory firm Evohealth, and a special episode of the MTPConnect Podcast dives into the report with two of the authors, Renae Beardmore and Professor Lloyd Sansom, and AAMRNet co chair Andrew Bowskill, to look at what we can do to step up to the challenges of AMR. If you are interested in
the issue, check out the Opinion Editorial by our Chair Hon Jaala Pulford which was published by InnovationAus - Antimicrobial Resistance – the ‘silent’ pandemic we need to take seriously. Through our Targeted Translation Research Accelerator (TTRA) program, we co-hosted the Australian Centre for Accelerating Diabetes Innovations’ (ACADI) Partnering Summit held on World Diabetes Day. With the focus on diabetes innovation, inclusion, and impact, it provided a comprehensive update on the
status and progress of diabetes research in Australia. We are also preparing to co-host the Australian Stroke and Heart Research Accelerator’s (ASHRA) Partnering Summit on 8 December at the Victorian Heart Hospital, bringing together clinicians, researchers, industry experts and funding bodies, to explore how collaborations and partnerships can accelerate research outcomes – I look forward to seeing you there. I would also like to congratulate our TTRA Senior Director Lauren Kelly, who is one of several authors whose paper “Prioritising research funding for cardiovascular disease and diabetes in Australia’’ has been published in the Journal of Public Health Policy, demonstrating through our TTRA program that using evidence based prioritisation research to inform funding opportunities ensures these opportunities are targeted to the highest priority areas in cardiovascular disease and diabetes, and are valuable to the community and reflective of expert opinion. Great to see this collaborative effort by BehaviourWorks Australia, ANU and Research Australia. The team has been wrapping up training and events for the year
in several cities. We have enjoyed catching up with REDI Fellows at a series of alumni networking events this month held in Perth and Sydney, celebrating connections made between industry and research. Our exclusive and popular REDI Medical Device Registration Bootcamps with experts from the Therapeutic Goods Administration have been held in Adelaide and Perth, with sold out sessions in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane coming up in December. In Perth, the WA Life Sciences Innovation Hub held an evening seminar with special guests, social entrepreneur Mark Koska OBE and Philip Leslie from ApiJect Systems, sharing their story of vision and innovation about inventing a prefilled single use injector to solve the
global syringe safety problem. To wrap up the year, and with support from Novacina, the Hub hosted the inaugural ‘Spotlight on 2023’ event in Perth for the WA health and medical life sciences sector to connect, network and celebrate a year of achievement and success. WA’s Innovation and Medical Research Minister, Hon Stephen Dawson MLC addressed the guests and I flicked the play switch on a couple of videos (view one and two) showcasing this year’s achievements and milestones from the sector. Our Adelaide Intermediary Program welcomed more than 240 innovators, entrepreneurs, researchers and healthcare service providers to South Australia’s APPLAUSE23 event. It was great to see guest speakers in action including MTPConnect Chair Hon. Jaala Pulford, Novartis Australia & New Zealand Country President Richard Tew and Master of Ceremonies Professor Mark Hutchinson. Jaala launched the screening of the Celebration Reel 2023, a video montage of SA success stories from across the sector. To end the evening, more than 40 CEOs, researchers, business professionals, students, and medtech entrepreneurs took part in a secret mission to create an amazing Flash Mob dance to showcase ‘collaboration’ across the sector – check out the photo album! To add to the inspiration, the MTPConnect Podcast’s second episode for the Australian Society for Medical Entrepreneurship and Innovation (ASME), introduces Associate Professor Fiona Brownfoot, a specialist obstetrician and a clinician-scientist based in Melbourne. Fiona talks about co-founding healthtech startup Kali Healthcare that is developing a new pregnancy monitoring system and her story is an inspiring one. If you are keen to know more about who we met on our Australian delegation to The Medtech Conference 2023 in Los Angeles, the MTPConnect Podcast captured some fascinating interviews with
medtech movers and shakers from Edwards LifeSciences, BioscienceLA, Scale Health, Peptilogics, Stryker, Medical Alley and BiVACOR – tune in here. Back home we welcomed Dr Natalie Rickers to the team as Commercialisation Director South Australia with MTPConnect’s Adelaide Intermediary Program. Natalie comes to us from Invitae where her business development role involved expanding biopharma programs, scaling international distributors and working with patient advocacy groups in Asia Pacific region. During the month, our AAMRNet Project Manager Meghana Kulkarni moved on to another opportunity in the sector at the Doherty Institute, and we thank her for her fantastic contribution to the Network and its initiatives. In other staff news, today we farewell BioMedTech Horizons Program Director Dr Vishal Srivastava. I'd like to thank Vishal for the enormous contribution he’s made to the successful delivery of the $45 million BMTH program and join with our whole team in wishing him all the very best. As we look toward the year end, keep an eye out for our Annual Report due to be published in mid-December. And we are delighted to be supporting the NSW End-of-Year Function on 7 December for members of AusBiotech, ARCS Australia and Bio NSW. You can stay in touch through our latest news, sector events, and opportunities all found here every month! Kind
regards, Stuart Dignam
