Financial backing to support the translation of innovative research is a hot topic. With a changing funding/investment landscape and growing competition for partnering, Australian SMEs and startups are under pressure to continue to finance their efforts and transform ideas and discoveries into products, services and jobs. This challenge was the focus of the Science Meets Parliament Address to the National Press Club, which was once again supported by MTPConnect. Known as a ‘Commercialisation Champion’, Science and Technology
Australia’s President Professor Sharath Sriram delivered the address in Canberra to a room full of science and industry leaders and policymakers, making a powerful case for Australia to become a ‘smart country’ rather than a ‘lucky country’. If you missed it, check out the televised event on the ABC. Financial investment in science and medical innovation and sovereign capabilities is critical for Australia’s future wellbeing and prosperity. And MTPConnect is actively supporting this
ecosystem by financially backing startups and SMEs, brokering collaborations, bringing industry and research together and tapping into international business opportunities. Our Adelaide Intermediary Program recently brought together the Australian government’s major non-dilutive funding programs driving healthtech innovations, in a forum to offer invaluable insights, advice and inspiration to over 200 guests from the health and innovation sector. We heard from AusIndustry’s David Luchetti, CRC-P Manager Martin Dent,
Medical Research Future Fund’s Tracey Laba, National Reconstruction Fund’s Rebecca Manen, Cooperative Research Australia’s Jane O’Dwyer and Thomas Ting from Australia’s Economic Accelerator. And the conversation was covered in a special episode of the MTPConnect Podcast out this month, to help you align your innovation with the right funding program and pick up some tips for making successful applications! Again at an event this month in Adelaide for the health and medical industry sector, our SA Insights Series delved into the dynamic world of healthtech investment to discuss the current global investment landscape with guests from Brandon Capital, Artesian, Southern Angels, Radium Capital, and Endpoints Capital. Moving to the international scene to tap into investment and partnering opportunities for our life sciences sector, we are working up activities to coincide with Bio Korea in May and BIO2024 in San Diego in June. Ahead of the Bio Korea conference, we will be in Seoul hosting two workshops on 7 May in partnership with Austrade, highlighting the strengths of Australia’s capabilities in Regenerative Medicine and Clinical Trials. It’s an opportunity to build on our MoU with KHIDI (Korean Health Development Institute) and introduce Korean companies and investors to Australian companies to foster collaboration and partnering opportunities. For BIO2024 in San Diego we are counting down to an exciting itinerary that includes an opportunity to join MTPConnect’s Top Level Visit Program just prior to the conference. This will be held on 30 and 31 May and will include site visits to multinational and industry organisations, insight keynotes and networking opportunities. There is a fee to participate in this optional extra program but it’s a great way to make the most of BIO and your visit to San Diego. Of course we are also working with state governments, DISR and CSIRO to create an eye-catching Team Australia pavilion in the Convention Centre and will be hosting the Global Networking and Business Reception on Sunday 2
June at Hotel del Coronado. To get ready for all these opportunities, check out our website to find out more about a number of Preparing for Partnering events. Our WA Life Sciences Innovation Hub and Adelaide Intermediary Program are organising several support events, including a face-to-face session ‘Pitching to your Audience’ to practice your elevator pitch and your ask! That’s on in Adelaide on 1 May 2024 at UniSA Enterprise Hub and in Perth on 8 May 2024 at Harry Perkins Institute. We have also been making connections in Switzerland, with my Australian Antimicrobial Resistance Network (AAMRNet) Co-chair Andrew Bowskill participating in the 8th AMR Conference, held in Basel, in early March. Andrew joined several meetings of international AMR Networks organised by the BEAM Alliance to promote AAMRNet’s work and Australia’s activities to deal with antimicrobial resistance, as well as exchange learnings, experiences and ideas. In the coming months, we will be releasing an updated report on Australia’s Clinical Trials sector as well as new information about the growing radiopharmaceuticals sector in South Australia. With so much happening in the sector, our newsletter below is a great way of keeping up to date on opportunities, events, and news. We look forward to connecting with you soon. Kind regards, Stuart Dignam

A needle brain biopsy involves inserting a needle into the patient’s brain to take a small sample of tissue.
This tissue is examined, which enables surgeons to accurately diagnose the type of cancer and choose the best treatment. However, inserting a needle into a patient’s brain carries significant risk; two to three per cent of patients suffer permanent disability and one per cent die as a result of this procedure.
As a recipient of BioMedTech Horizons program funding, Miniprobes set out to evaluate two imaging technologies that could be incorporated individually or in combination into a brain biopsy needle, establish the feasibility of a minimal viable product including manufacturing feasibility, and define a clear way forward to clinical release. Read
on to find out how Miniprobes – a high-tech spin-out from The University of Adelaide that produces fibre-optic imaging devices – is developing a smart needle that can detect when it is correctly positioned in cancerous tissue.
