NWTD reaches financial close

TasNetworks reached financial close for NWTD in early May 2026, marking the final major step before construction begins on its largest-ever infrastructure project.

Project financing requirements are now complete for the NWTD Stage 1. This includes debt funding committed from the Clean Energy Finance Corporation and equity funding secured from the Tasmanian Government.

This gives the project certainty to move into the construction phase once the remaining regulatory approvals are finalised.

TasNetworks’ Chair, Roger Gill, said reaching financial close was a defining moment for the project and for Tasmania’s energy future.

“Achieving financial close is a major milestone for the project and reflects years of detailed planning, collaboration and rigorous due diligence,” Mr Gill said.

“It provides the certainty required to progress confidently toward construction and we look forward to being in a position to issue notice to proceed to our head contractor Genus in the coming months.”

Building community connection at Agfest

TasNetworks was proud to once again be part of Agfest in May, joining thousands of visitors at one of Tasmania’s most iconic regional events. As a long-standing sponsor, it’s always a great opportunity to connect with the community and share more about the work we’re doing across the state.

This year, the NWTD team brought a hands-on, interactive display to help visitors better understand how transmission infrastructure is built, the scale of the project, and how it will support Tasmania's energy future. From glass insulators and steel components through to conductor wire and optical ground wire (OPGW), the display gave visitors of all ages a chance to get up close with the materials that make up a transmission tower, sparking interest and plenty of meaningful conversation about the project and what to expect during construction.

A big thank you to Rural Youth Tasmania and all involved in delivering another successful Agfest. We’re looking forward to continuing these conversations and returning again next year.
