Week at The High SchoolLast week was Stand Up Week at The High School run by a team of Form 5 pupils to raise awareness about the LGBTQ+ community. Each day highlighted a different theme: Monday was LGBT history, Tuesday was awareness and language, Wednesday was about kindness, Thursday about identity, and to wrap it all up Friday was about celebration and pride. The mornings began with sweets, music, and occasionally information at the doors to set the tone for the day. Just Dance was a big success at a few lunchtimes and my favourite part of the week would definitely be the rainbow everyone helped us complete with their thumbprints now on display beside The Reynolds Hall. There was a bake sale and as a final celebration we raised the Progress Pride flag which represents all members of the LGBTQ+
community and also has stripes to recognize people of colour. The week was a huge success. Think Languages DayOn Monday 22 November Form 4 pupils celebrated world languages and cultures by taking part in the Think Languages Day in association with Post-Primary Languages Ireland (PPLI) which is a dedicated unit providing expertise and support for foreign languages education in Ireland. The event involved 12,000 pupils in Form 4 from over 150 schools around the country. Pupils had an opportunity to celebrate all the fun and benefits of foreign language learning through interesting and active workshops, competitions, hearing from speakers and learning from peers and other members of the school and local community. At The High School workshop topics included Portuguese Capoeira, Irish Sign language, interpreting and careers in the European Union, and Chinese
traditions. Pupils even had the chance to taste some delicious international treats at breaktime. It was a fun and inspiring day for all involved. A huge thank you to the wonderful staff in the canteen and the Modern Languages Department for making this such a successful day. Taekwon-do SuccessCongratulations to senior pupil Samuel Walsh who was selected to represent Ireland at the International Taekwon-do Federation (ITF) Championships held in La Nucia, Spain where he was awarded Gold and Bronze medals in the Patterns and Team Patterns events, respectively. We wish our pupil every success as he competes for further honours at international level in the 2021-22 season. Senior Hockey WinThis week the Senior 1 Hockey team were victorious against Temple Carrig Form 1 Boys' HockeyThe Form 1 hockey A team were successful in their match against Mount Temple Comprehensive School in their first league game winning 3-0 with Peter Kenna scoring the opening goal in the second half and Robert O'Brien scoring two goals. It was a very tough game but our defence kept a clean sheet which helped us a lot. Alexander Deal made some brilliant saves in the game and helped us to avoid going a goal down. The Form 1 team are looking very strong with Karac Tipping at sweeper and Leo Dodd playing at the back. The Form 1 hockey A team has now registered two wins in its last two games. Form 2 Boys HockeyThe Minor A Boys Hockey team produced a tremendous performance against Sutton Park School on Wednesday with a great goal late in the first half from Ethan Clarke. The goal was a long time coming with HSD putting a lot of pressure down the wings. We scored with a well-worked pass into Ethan Clarke and finished off with a great push into the net from the goalscorer. The second half was another exceptional performance from HSD. The game ended up with a 1-0 win to HSD. Our three most valuable players were Toby Britnell, Edward Webb, and Leo Kelly. A great day for the HSD in Sutton Park before the exams next week. Senior RugbyOn Wednesday the Senior Cup Team played our second match in the league. We hosted St Andrew’s College on our home 4G pitch which is always an honour. Despite a rough start, going down 12-0 early in the first half, we managed to get ourselves back into the game. With the help of a short line under the post from our captain Luke Hardy and penalty goals from Andrew Farrelly we were right back in it. Unfortunately the match seemed to slip away from us, as a few defensive errors and unlucky bounces brought our opponents back into the lead. Despite the tremendous effort the team put the final score was 29-18 to our opponents. Although it was a disappointing result to a game which we feel we could have
won some great rugby was played and there are many positives to take from the game. We now focus on learning from our mistakes and we look forward to the other league games in the coming weeks. Form 4 GeographyThis week in our Geography class we were assigned to bring in a piece of food from different countries. As I am half South African my partner and I decided to bake a cake with the South African flag on it. Not only was this class a good break from the normal work, it was also very delicious. This task helped us have a better understanding of different food from different places. We wish we could do this again! Geography Week Survey ResultsDuring Geography Week Form 1-4 classes came to the Library to learn more about Climate Change and alternative energies. Everyone filled out a survey which asked 'What would be the one renewable energy that you think would be the best for our future?' 364 pupils voted and the results are as follows: Solar 154; Windpower 109; Hydroelectric 48; Tidal energy 28; Geothermal 14; and Biomass 11. Thank you to all those pupils who participated in this survey. Christmas CardsWe are pleased to announce that the Form 4 Business class have partnered with the Form 5 Art classes to create and sell Christmas cards in aid of Our Lady's Children’s Hospital. The cards will be available to order in school next week at break and lunch times outside The Reynolds Hall. Cash and card payments will be accepted and as noted above all proceeds from this project will be donated to the hospital. There will be a wide range of designs on offer and we would appreciate if you could support this very worthy cause when considering buying your Christmas Cards this year. Thanks to the Doggett Group for their continued support with this project. Advent CollectionWe are calling on members of The High School community to donate to our Help the Homeless Advent Appeal. We are collecting warm clothing, necessities, and toys for those in most need. If you have any items that you think might be of benefit to the homeless please leave them in the collection boxes at Reception. Shoebox SuccessI should like to thank everyone who made a shoebox or donated money to the appeal on behalf of everyone involved in the Team Hope Christmas Shoebox Appeal 2021. We had a hugely successful year collecting 143 shoeboxes and raising €1,750. This is the equivalent of 230 shoeboxes altogether! The Transition Year pupils put slot of hard work into announcements, newsletters, stalls, and fundraisers over the last month and a half and we are very proud of the outcome. Dates for your Diary
