Hi everyone, I hope you are all enjoying the last of the autumn weather and it's great to see the market so active and full every weekend. With winter just a few weeks away, it's a reminder to rug up well, stay warm and make the most of the winter tourism opportunities. Dark Mofo is earlier this year and everyone should have received an email from the market team about the road closures and access during the festival. Although there is some short-term inconvenience with the loss of the Salamanca Lawns, Dark Mofo does present a wonderful opportunity for stallholders, as visitors flock to the city and look for other things to see and do while they are here. It's an opportunity to dress up your stall, showcase your red products and wear something red to show your support. Robert Matson - City Welcome Manager
Stallholder etiquette The market crew have recently received some negative feedback around vehicle and driver behaviour in the market, particularly during pack-up time in the afternoon. A couple of things to remember:
Puppy Parking Volunteers We have noticed recently that there are a few dogs in the market and its important that we can all help remind people of the RSPCA Puppy Parking service on the Parliament Lawns. The RSPCA volunteers do a fabulous job looking after dogs and keeping them safe while allowing their owners some valuable shopping time. The RSPCA is always looking to recruit new volunteers to help with our Puppy Parking at the market. If any stallholders are looking for volunteer work for their family members, young or old, please reach out to the RSPCA for more information. Volunteering is a great way to meet people, do some good community work and have a ball playing with dogs. The more volunteers they have, the more dogs they can mind, so it's a win-win!
New look for the info booth The information booth is a central point at the market and is not only a landmark for people walking into the market, but is also home to our wonderful market volunteers. The info booth is over 10 years old and, over the past few years, the sides have been looking worn out and faded. It has now deteriorated to the point where the plastic walls were starting to disintegrate. We have made the decision to undertake essential work, while keeping the costs low and within our existing budget. The team at Cleary's Gates have done a great job removing all the walls and stripped it back to the bones. It will now be fitted out with replacement panels that showcase our new colours and icons on the walls. The final result will be a bright and fresh new information booth for our volunteers and crew. The new design will stand out for visitors, be easily noticed from the waterfront side, and it will also be watertight! Keep an eye out for the bright new design! Thank you to our volunteers
This week is volunteer week and we wanted to give a big shout out to our volunteers at the info booth who dedicate hours of their time to help make the market a warm and welcoming place for visitors. The volunteers not only help people find stalls and products within the market, but also assist with directions, general advice and a welcoming smile. The volunteer program is run by the City of Hobart which also manages the volunteers at the TTIC, Cruise Ship terminal and the Hobart International Airport. Licensed stallholder absences and credits A reminder that in order to receive a credit for your absences, we do require at least 10 days’ notice (the notice period does not include the absence date). Credits will be placed against your account after the last absence date has passed.
A new version of the market map The market map has had a makeover and instead of being in a folded brochure format it is available as a tear-off flat sheet at the information booth. This will make it easier for the volunteers who often need to unfold them and write on the maps, especially when people are looking for a specific stall. On the front is the full map of market stalls and on the back of the page we have included some history and some fun facts about the market. We hope this will make it more interesting to read and also make it a bit of a keepsake.
Winter campaign for Salamanca Market To help support stallholders during the winter months, we are investing in a winter campaign for Salamanca Market. The aim will be to promote the market to both locals and interstate audiences and showcase our warmer products and experiences during the colder months, including hot food, warm clothes and textiles, spirits and the experience of being at a winter market in Hobart. We are also planning to include lots of stallholder content - so please email us if you would like to be featured on our socials during winter! Send us an email with some lovely photos and information and we will add you to our social calendar.
How to get featured on social media We often get questions about how to get your business featured on our Facebook or Instagram pages. It's really easy to do, simply email us! Send us some information and a few nice photos and we'll add you in. We don't often hear what you have been up to and the algorithm doesn't show us all the tags or comments, so if you really want us to see something or share something, please contact us the good old fashioned way!
