Boekvoorstelling: Kan Congo de wereld redden? - 5/6/2025

Op 5 juni wordt het nieuwe boek van MO*journalist John Vandaele voorgesteld in Herberg Macharius in Gent: Kan Congo de wereld redden?… waarom diepgaande samenwerking tussen Europa en Afrika voor beiden wenselijk is.

MO*journaliste Elien Spillebeen (o.v.) praat met Jurgen Heytens van Faja Lobi (vanuit Congo), Hans Verbeeck, professor aan de UGent en expert woud-ecosystemen en Joseph Mande, Congolees doctoraal onderzoeker aan de UGent, Filip Verbelen, woudexpert bij Greenpeace, fotograaf Bart Lasuy en John Vandaele, auteur van het boek en journalist bij MO*.

Online café: Accelerating Plant Molecular Biology in Africa through Local Manufacturing of Reagents - 6/6/2025

The supply chain for molecular biology reagents in Africa is slow and expensive, holding back researchers from putting molecular biology approaches into practice. Training in plant molecular biology and advanced techniques like gene editing is a valuable part of capacity building, but practical challenges remain in putting these techniques into practice in LMICs.

In this talk, Dr. Molloy will explore some of the major bottlenecks in reagent access and the potential to overcome them through distributed manufacturing of reagents in Africa

New Five-Year Term of the Faculty Chair South Africa
 

Starting in the 2025-2026 academic year, the Centre for the Study of the Afrikaans Language and South Africa (GAZ, Ghent University) will launch a second term of the Arts Faculty Chair South Africa: Languages, Literatures, Culture, and Society.

The chairholders will reside at Ghent University for a period of six weeks. In the first semester of the upcoming academic year, two appointment periods are planned: September–October 2025 and November–December 2025.

Summer School on Plant Genome Editing - 5-13/6/2025

We are organizing a MoBioLab Summer School on Plant Genome Editing, scheduled from 5 to 13 June 2025 at Ghent University. The training is intended for alumni of MoBioLab courses in Africa and participants from the Flemish region.

The program will include computer-based sessions, laboratory practicals, lectures, group discussions and poster presentations.

Sibo Rugwiza Kanobana. 'Lumumba’s droom' - boekvoorstelling en gesprek - 26/6/2025
 

65 jaar na Patrice Lumumba’s historische onafhankelijkheidsspeech en 100 jaar na zijn geboorte, verschijnt Lumumba’s droom. Wat zijn gedachtegoed ons vandaag kan leren, het nieuwste boek van Sibo Rugwiza Kanobana.

In Lumumba’s droom werpt Kanobana een nieuw licht op Lumumba’s denken en toont hij aan hoe verrassend actueel zijn ideeën vandaag nog zijn. Het boek is ook doorspekt met Lumumba’s eigen woorden.

Boekvoorstelling ‘Vloedgolf? De complexiteit van klimaatmigratie ontrafeld’ door Ilse Ruyssen - 26/6/2026
 

In haar nieuwe boek neemt Professor Ruyssen (UGent) u mee voorbij de clichés. Vanuit haar jarenlange onderzoek naar migratie – en een diepe bezorgdheid over de impact van klimaatverandering op mens en samenleving – werpt ze een genuanceerde blik op hoe klimaatverandering en migratie wereldwijd verweven zijn met bredere vragen over ongelijkheid, rechtvaardigheid en veerkracht.

Summer School in African Politics - 30/6-2/7
 

This School in African Politics (in hybrid format) aims to:

  • Offer unique multidisciplinary knowledge of the African continent, focusing on relevant and timely political themes;
  • Provide training in research strategies and methods for the analysis of political phenomena in Africa;
  • Offer personalized comments to help participants develop research skills and different types of projects (e.g. for research or intervention).
