HELP! Do You Know How to Use Wordpress? We’re looking for some help with our website. If you’ve looked at it lately, you can see that it just doesn’t want to behave itself. Some of the issues we’re having are above our (non-existent) pay grades, and we’re looking for someone to help us out. If you have Wordpress experience or web development skills and you’d be interested in helping, we would LOVE to hear from you. Please email me at mmauro@scca-susq.com and we can chat. From the Editor's DeskA huge shoutout to David Myers, Eric Peachey, Justin Peachey for their performance at the UMI Autocross Challenge this weekend, and best of luck at King of the Mountain next month! What It's Like to Feel WelcomeBy Larry Cronin SCCA strives to have a welcoming environment at all its events and activities. Of course, the national website has the typical legal disclaimer supporting equality for all participants but what does that really look like at the local chapter? Back in March, I volunteered to be the Membership Chief for Autocross. The big focus has been to create that welcoming environment for the new drivers and those who might be interested in becoming an SCCA member. That’s not something that one person can do. I have to say that the Susquehanna Region is a friendly bunch. I am always amazed at the quick responses to questions and other support on the Facebook page. For many, this is their first contact with our group. Travis and Ron Gross are typically the next contact at Registration. These two sign everyone in and cover car class changes smoother than any customer service professionals. Our tech inspectors may appear somewhat ominous, but I have never heard them bark at anyone. The top-notch novice walk-through by Dennis and Derek Latshaw is incredibly helpful for new drivers. I have enlisted many of you to provide ride-alongs for novices with no complaints or consideration about the extra weight. Make sure you reach out to a new person if you have the opportunity. Thanks for making SCCA what it’s supposed to be. Dog Days of SummerBy Nick Landis Hello my dirty friends, as we near the end of summer, we’re preparing for our second weekend of RallySprint racing at Rausch Creek. The course needs minor prep work to be able to offer some very fast and flowing runs for the competitors and exciting action for our volunteers. However, we’re still in need of volunteers to make the event happen. If you’ve never been to a RallySprint or stage rally before, I strongly encourage you to come out and join us for the weekend or at least just a single day. We can guarantee that you get to see lots of fast, sideways, and high-flying action as the vehicles traverse the course through the woods and over the jumps. Unlike autocross and rallycross, our volunteers don’t have to chase cones, but rather just get to enjoy the action up close. We also offer a free lunch to all competitors as a thank you for your time. If this seems like fun to you, please sign up at http://msreg.com/RS2-Volunteer. This past weekend was host to the New England Forest Rally in Bethel, Maine. It has historically been a very tough race with lots of stage miles and very technical roads. Quite a few vehicles didn’t make it out unscathed and competition was tough. Our very own Dan Shirley was there for his first ever stage rally. Dan competed in RallyCoss for many years in an automatic Subaru station wagon and held many wins in that time. He even competed in our last RallySprint and got a taste for the woods for the first time. Dan was at a serious disadvantage to the other competitors in NA4WD with stock suspension on roads that have many rough patches that will test your suspension to its fullest abilities and yet he still pulled off a 3rd place win. This was a much-deserved victory for Dan and his co-driver Nathan Lybarger, who had to overcome motion sickness issues before the race ever began. Congratulations to you and all of the competitors that finished the race. Susquehanna Drivers Take On Giant's Despair HillclimbBy Alan Lesher July 9 & 10, 2022, Laurel run Pa. the Nepa Region hosted a hillclimb in the PHA series. There were 10 Susquehanna region members driving. Here they are, in no particular order. Alan Lesher driving a Neon SRT4 in STU. Jon Eikenberg driving a Special. Ron Holtzapple driving a roadster. Don McLaughlin, Renault GTL. Bryan McCrea in a Toyota 86 in the DSP class. Adam Weaver, Porsche BSP. Don Dehart & Crystal Whisler driving the family Neon in FSP. Joe Whirely, FP Sprite. Bryan Fritzler, ASP classed Fritzler-Raven. Complete results are on the PHA website, There are more autocross cars and specials every year, less road race cars. Whisler beat grandad and turned a personal best to take the class win. McCrea went back & forth with another DSP driver, and was able to take the class by less than a half second. Eikenberg won by a bigger margin in S1. Several won in single car classes. The largest class was S3, and it was full of older Nascar modifieds, shot track stock cars and Nascar race trucks, plus a LS1 powered Jag. Susquehanna's Big Splash at Bristol ProSoloEight Susquehanna Regional Members traveled down to Bristol, Tennessee to battle it out in 4 different classes at the 2022 Tire Rack SCCA Bristol ProSolo. Most of the members also competed at the 2022 SCCA New Jersey ProSolo. They are fighting for points on a national level to win the overall championship. Kicking things off in Ladies L2 was Kristy (Tia) Cover driving her pink Supra. She was looking to improve her performance from the New Jersey event. This event had a large L2 field of 11 drivers from CS, DS, BS, ES, SS, and FS. This is an index class, so she had an uphill battle running a B street car. She finished the first day AM in 2nd place and PM in 4th and final trophy spot. She had a slim margin over two very experienced drivers. Unfortunately, she wasn’t able to improve her times on the second day. On Cindy Duncan’s last run, she was able to cut .291 seconds off her times to jump into 4th position. Then Ashley Weaver finished her runs and was able to cut an impressive 2.43 seconds off on her left lane run to displace Cindy in fourth and push Tia down to 6th. Tia’s raw time would have put her in third place. Even though Tia didn’t trophy she showed great improvement over New Jersey. Next up was B Street with Geoffrey Wolpert and Matt Skelly, both driving Tia Cover’s pink Supra. Geoffrey Wolpert was looking to defend his B street win at New Jersey and hoping to repeat as Shootout champion. Geoffrey ended the first day down .209 seconds to Stephen Holzer and his BMW M3. Geoffrey felt he had time to pick up on the left lane and did he ever cut time! On the second day his first pass on the left cut .584 seconds off and gave Geoffrey the lead, which he would never give up. Even though he couldn’t cut any time off on the right lane on the second day, he cut even more off on his last pass on the left lane. He cut another .251 seconds off on that pass taking home the victory in B street by .525 seconds. He now enters the ProSolo finale (in Lincoln, NE) with 20 points and tied for the lead in B Street with Andrew Kessel. Matt Skelly finished seventh out of 7 but kept Geoffrey’s tire pressure perfect for the entire event. Next up was Chris Brown and Eric Peachey running Cam. At ProSolo events they run all the Cam cars together and use an index. Chris Brown ran in Cam after having car issues the last few weeks. He was driving Matt Skelly’s supercharged Mustang that may be the least prepared car in Cam. They worked hard before the event to get a spoiler built to help that car handle a bit better. Chris struggled with staying off the cones, running a new car, but had a lot of fun doing it. He ended up having a strong day to move up the rankings. He finished 20th out of 25 drivers in Cam. Eric Peachey was driving his brothers Hawk Performance sponsored Corvette. After the first day Eric had a comfortable lead but in ProSolo no lead is safe. On the second day, it came down to Eric having to improve on his last two runs because Jeff Dobbins also improved on his last two runs. Eric ended up winning Cam by .102 seconds. This is Eric’s second win running Cam at ProSolo this year. That means he goes into the ProSolo finale (Lincoln, NE) tied for first. Justin Peachey, David Myers and Jared McGahen all ran Race Tire Index 2. In Race Tire Index 2 you have CP, EP, XP, FP and DP cars all battling it out. They use an index to see who wins the class to try and keep it fair. David and Jared both drove David’s 2003 Miata, The Little Wimpy Puppy built for DP. The two of them fought hard in a car that had the least amount of tire and down 500 hp to some of the cars. David finished eighth and Jared finished ninth in his first ProSolo. Justin was driving his very versatile Hawk Performance sponsored 2007 Corvette. Justin battled hitting cones on the right lane but his only clean pass on that side was the fastest raw time of anyone in the class. His time in the left lane was also the fastest of the class. The index really hurt Justin in this class. Even though he was the fastest (raw time) on both sides he finished third in class. He still trophied though. He will now have to decide if he’s going to run another event because the winner, Robert Lewis, has increased his lead on Justin for total points. Justin will have to win the finale (Lincoln, NE) to win the Championship. To recap, Susquehanna has three drivers that could win National Class Championships in ProSolo this year. That is amazing for our little region. Is there something in the water? Were they somehow touched with superpowers from the Three Mile Island accident? Only time will tell. There are only a few events left and it should be exciting to see how things play out. July Regional MeetingWe’re going to begin rotating venues in 2022!
