Factory testing success for NWTD equipment

Members of our TasNetworks project engineering team and construction partner Genus recently travelled to China to witness testing of high-voltage equipment that will be installed as part of the NWTD project.

• Our substations team visited General Electric’s manufacturing facility in Suzhou to witness testing of high-voltage circuit breakers.
• Our transmission lines team visited Changshu Fengfan Power Equipment Co. to witness testing of high-voltage transmission line equipment, including transmission tower prototyping and conductor type testing.

These tests were all completed successfully, met international standards, and verified that equipment has been built correctly and performs as expected before it is shipped to site. No issues were identified, no re-testing was required, and the equipment was approved for shipment to Tasmania.

"Seeing the equipment successfully pass testing was important, but being there in person gave us much greater value," said James Williams, TasNetworks Commissioning Lead.

"We were able to see firsthand how the equipment is manufactured and tested, review the quality assurance processes behind it, and work directly with the engineering teams.

"Having those conversations face-to-face meant technical questions could be answered immediately, helping us build confidence in the equipment and reduce risk ahead of installation."

The trip marks another important milestone for NWTD and provides confidence that critical equipment is ready for delivery and installation in Tasmania.

Genus grows north-west presence

Genus continues to strengthen its presence in North West Tasmania, as preparations for the NWTD gather momentum.

Further upgrades have been completed at the East Devonport office facility, with the fit out now nearing completion. The site has become a key project hub, with all Genus management staff now based there.

To support upcoming works, Genus has also opened a second laydown yard at Spreyton, increasing its operational capacity across the region. At the same time, contractor training has commenced, helping prepare the workforce for project delivery.

As Genus becomes further established within the local community, opportunities for regional businesses continue to grow. Increased demand for locally supplied goods and services is delivering ongoing economic benefits, reinforcing the project's commitment to supporting local participation and creating lasting value for communities along the NWTD route.

What does a bright future look like for your community?

TasNetworks is investing $10 million into local communities surrounding the NWTD through the Bright Futures Fund (BFF). 

With applications for round one closing on 2 August, a seven-member independent community assessment panel who are tasked with independently assessing applications met at a workshop held last week. Panel members received training on the SmartyGrants platform and assessment framework, ready to review applications in a consistent and collaborative way. The panel have a very important role to play, and we thank them for their commitment to the process!

The applications received reflects a range of community-led projects and ideas for big and small amounts of funding.  Applicants will be contacted with the outcome of their application in late September.

The Fund will open for round two later in the year as we again seek submissions from eligible not-for-profit organisations. Further information can be found on our website - www.tasnetworks.com.au/bff
