Learn from Indigenous Voices
Indigenous authors, illustrators, editors and publishers are featured in the First Nations Métis Inuit NextReads newsletter. This newsletter consists of selections from Ontario Library Service's First Nation Communities READ - 2021/2022 Longlist of Nominated Titles.

In Indigenous ways of storytelling and learning, each story has and gifts its own voice. The shared voices of the storyteller, creator, author and illustrator are unique gifts too. Likewise, if you receive these ‘story gifts’, your voice has its own unique response.

Subscribe to this newsletter via the Library's NextReads Newsletter webpage. Each month’s newsletter is the result of a mutual relationship and collaboration between members of the Indigenous community in Guelph and the Library. Guelph Public Library acknowledges and honours all Indigenous creators equally.

Register for the in-person Knitting Connections event on Tuesday, June 14 at 6 p.m. in the West End Library Branch Courtyard. Discover our digital library and connect with other knitters and crocheters for a good cause.

Knitting Connections for Seniors Initiative
The Library has been awarded a $25,000 grant for a new ‘Knitting Connections’ project funded by the Government of Canada’s New Horizons for Seniors Program. Older adults will now have the opportunity to develop new connections and give back to our community while also learning more about digital literacy and online safety.

This federal grant and contributions program supports projects that are led or inspired by seniors who are making a difference in the lives of others in their communities. The Library’s ‘Knitting Connections’ project will encourage seniors to knit and crochet newborn hats as well as scratch mittens. These items will then be added to the Library’s Born to Read early literacy bags which are supplied to all babies born in Guelph. This is a great opportunity for seniors to give back to their community while developing new friendships and building a solid foundation for lifelong learning.

Interested participants can join us monthly for in-person and/or online knitting and crochet group sessions. During these ‘Knitting Connection’ events, special guests will be invited to present a variety of online safety topics to help you develop stronger digital literacy skills. To register for these events, please visit the library’s website events calendar at www.guelphpl.ca/events and search for Knitting Connections.

Not enough time to participate in these monthly events? Why not check out a ‘Knitting Connections’ do-it-yourself kit to help support the Library’s Born to Read program? These kits include all the supplies and instructions required to complete a hat project and will be available starting June 1, 2022. Reserve your Knitting Connections Kit today at www.guelphpl.ca/catalogue.

Amazing Friendships Between Animals and Saints
Local author Greg Kennedy and illustrator Kerry Lyn Wilson, have recently donated their latest book, "
Amazing Friendships Between Animals and Saints" - which is now available to check out with your library card.

"This beautifully illustrated children's book tells the stories of amazing friendships that grew between holy people and animals in days gone by. These friendships, with their fable-like qualities, have much to teach us today about how to care for our common home, Earth, and how to live in kindly ways with all creation." -- page [4]

Thank you Greg and Kerry!
