Our Academic Societies kicked off with the School of Athens discussing 'Are environmental activists going too far with their campaigns?' and our CCF have done a night excursion. Meanwhile our termly Scholar's Recital was the first formal concert of 2024. Tickets are now available for March events the Ben Crosland Quintet, an Evening of Jazz & Swing and the Wilson Run events (Dinner, Lunch and Concert). Other highlights of the calendar have been the Morgan Run (featured on the cover of this week's Sports Report) and the sailing. Our Feva racing teams were rewarded with sunshine, constant wind and blue skies for race training at Killington. Pupils were excited to sail the two new Feva's that the school has bought this year and are all looking forward to the team racing events in the next half term. This week we're delighted to share with you the story of Old Sedberghian Bob Peters. As part of our Pathways series of presentations, Bob kindly shared his story and the importance to his success of hard work and making personal contact with customers. Sedbergh is incredibly proud that our pupils aim high. Whilst several of the UKs top universities have not yet made offers, there's excitement for those of our delighted sixth formers who have received offers from universities including: University of Oxford, Durham University, the University of Bath, the University of Edinburgh and University College London. Below we've featured an interview with Pru we did last term with Pru who is heading to Princeton in the United States. In closing, we congratulate the pupils celebrated in this term's Commendation Lunch and featured in the banner of this newsletter. Pathways SEDTalks: Old Sedberghian Bob Peters Talks to Pupils About His Pathway to a Career in TravelBob (Lupton House 1984 – 1989, before it became a girl’s House) has worked in the travel industry for 22 years and launched his own successful business. He says, "I think that travel is not one of those things you would automatically think, 'Oh, I’m going to leave school and I’m going to be a travel agent.'" It took Bob a while to find his true passion; he described his journey - and the importance of working hard and picking up the phone - when he visited to talk to our pupils. This presentation was part of our 2024 Pathways series. Aiming High: Pru's Journey From Sedbergh to Ivy League in the USAfter Sedbergh, Pru – Captain of the Hockey Team and England pathways player – will be going to Princeton University in the United States to study and play hockey. Pru describes how her teachers and House Mistress have helped her to keep her grades high and her hockey strong. "I definitely think what’s helped me most will be the boarding.. I remember speaking to my now new coach and she was like, you’re going to be so much better prepared compared to other people. Just having that experience, it’s going to be very similar, just over here." New Bus Routes From Edinburgh and WindermereWe are delighted to announce the introduction of our first daily bus service from the Windermere area to Sedbergh Senior School, starting September 2024. This development comes in response to a significant increase in day enquiries and registrations from families in the Lake District. Additionally, in response to a surge in enquiries and registrations from Scotland we have also launched a dedicated Edinburgh bus route which began January. This new route now runs during exeat weekends (optional) and half terms. Highlights From the Scholar's RecitalThe latest of our termly Scholars’ Recitals took place on Sunday 28th January – the first formal concert of 2024. As ever, a selection of soloists made up the majority of the programme, and we enjoyed varied selection of repertoire from pupils across all year groups. |
