NOTABLE NEWS

Commitments 3.0 - Progress Update

One year ago, we announced the launch of Commitments 3.0, a process to reimagine the Presidents' Climate Leadership Commitments (Commitments) to reflect necessary and foundational framing in climate justice principles, update existing technical guidance to reflect the urgency of the climate crisis, and consider various membership models. Many thanks to the more than 50 of you who've contributed to this process. Your conversations helped inform our new strategy, one that we believe will shape the sector’s climate action for years to come.

Webinar: Unlocking Energy Savings to Fund Campus Facilities Upgrades: A University of Northwestern Ohio Case Study

Thursday, April 6, 1:00pm ET

Often the biggest barrier to upgrading to energy-efficiency equipment, improving indoor air quality and reducing GHG emissions is budget, especially when most colleges and universities have years of deferred maintenance and are struggling to keep enrollment up. In this webinar, the University of Northwestern Ohio (UNOH) and Metrus discuss how their energy efficiency retrofit enabled UNOH to install best-in-class equipment and energy technologies funded entirely through energy savings – and how your campus could too!

This Working Group is intended for BIPOC identified faculty, staff, administration, students, community partners, champions, and advocates of HBCU and MSI institutions in and beyond Second Nature’s Climate Leadership Network. As a result of months of intentional and authentic relationship building, and strategic planning, we look forward to continuing and cultivating the Working Group into 2023. Many thanks to our partners Black Sustainability, Inc. for making this possible.

RESOURCES

Announcing the GRITS Library Digest

SEI recently launched a new GRITS Library Digest feature that highlights new projects added by other institutions to the GRITS Library. The GRITS Library is a one-of-a-kind resource for learning about more than 4,000 projects your peers are implementing to decarbonize their institution and reduce resource use, and finding specific projects you can recreate.

If your institution is a signatory in the Climate Leadership Network, you are eligible for free basic access to GRITS. By signing up for the Digest we'll create a free basic GRITS account for your institution (if one doesn't already exist) and provide you with a login. When you see a project that catches your eye, you'll be able to click through and learn all the details about up to four projects each month in the GRITS Library. You'll also be able to directly access the GRITS Library and search, sort, or filter to find relevant projects and even connect with other institutions through GRITS. Sign Up for the GRITS Library Digest.

Federal Climate Funding Hub

The 2022 Inflation Reduction Act and 2021 Bipartisan Infrastructure Law provide an unprecedented level of funding for climate solutions and policies. Now it’s up to states, cities, businesses, and non-profits to use the funding to achieve their climate goals. A new resource page hosted by America Is All In, serves as a hub with the latest guidance, upcoming deadlines, and new resources to help inform states, cities, towns, businesses, NGOs, and individuals on how to access funding from the new legislation.

INTERNSHIPS ANNOUNCED

Summer Internships for Allegheny Students - Now Accepting Applicants

Thanks to a generous donor, we are now accepting applications from rising Juniors or Seniors at Allegheny College for two paid summer internships. This is an exciting opportunity to assist with the support of Second Nature’s Climate Programs. The interns will support ongoing resilience and climate justice work, and help support other initiatives like developing resources and case studies to assist campuses in achieving their climate goals. Remote work will be required. One of the two positions available will be filled by a BIPOC individual.
