Starting today and continuing all week, the university is hosting events aimed at educating and empowering the Yale community to understand the challenges of climate change and be part of building a more resilient planet. Check the calendar of events.

All EVST majors are encouraged to attend EVST senior essay presentations this Wednesday from 7:00-8:30pm in Burke Auditorium, Kroon Hall. Drinks and light refreshments will be available. Please join us for this fun and informative event to learn about the EVST senior essay process and celebrate the success of the EVST Class of 2025! Below are the seniors presenting:

Prizes

The Yale library invites Yale College seniors to submit their senior essays for consideration to win prizes for excellence. Prizewinners are awarded a cash prize in the amount of $500 (honorable mention recipients receive $250), and all winners’ essays are published on EliScholar, Yale Library’s digital platform for scholarly publishing. Students receive their awards at their residential commencement ceremonies.

  • The Library Map Prize is awarded to a Yale College senior for the best use of maps in a senior essay.  The deadline for the Library Map Prize 2025 is Wednesday, April 30, 2025, 11:59 p.m. EDT.  View submission guidelines. Submit your essay for consideration. Past EVST recipients include:

  • The Harvey M. Applebaum '59 Prize is awarded to a Yale College senior for an outstanding essay based on research that has substantial use of national government or intergovernmental organization (IGO) information, including documents or data.  The submission deadline is Wednesday, May 7, 2025, 11:59 pm EDT. Past EVST recipients include:
    • An Equitable Transformation of the Energy System: The Role of State-Level Incentives for Distributed Energy Resources, Trinidad Kechkian '21
    • Renewable Energy Access and Resilience in Urban Developing Areas: Distributed Solar Networks and Peer-to-Peer Energy Trading in Puerto Rico, Pascale Bronder '19 

John Addison Porter Prize | The Porter Prize recognizes original scholarship that gathers and synthesizes facts and principles to create work of broad human interest.   Students submit their own work for consideration. Deadline: May 1st at 1:00 PM. Submission details, guidelines, FAQs, and past winners: porterfield.yale.edu

Graduation Stoles | Reminder, EVST stoles for the class of 2025 will be available at senior essay presentations on April 23rd and 30th. You can also pick one up in Linda Evenson's office in Kroon (G-04). An EVST class of 2025 photo will be taken on Class Day. Stay tuned for details!

Alumni Spotlight

Congratulations to Max Teirstein EVST BS Environmental Studies, Political Science '22 for managing the CLEAN soil testing effort at USC to test for lead in areas affected by the LA fires and smoke plumes.  Contaminant Level Evaluation and Assessment for Neighborhoods (CLEAN) is a rapid response soil testing program from the USC Department of Earth Sciences, Keck School of Medicine, and Public Exchange. Anyone in Los Angeles who is concerned about the impacts of the fires on soil may participate in this program, at no cost.

Max is the Center for Public Exchange Climate & Sustainability Project Manager at the University of Southern California where he helps public and private sector actors build partnerships with faculty to inform climate & sustainability projects and governance. For each partner, he finds the right faculty member and funding opportunity to produce evidence-based decision-making and innovative new technologies with impact in the climate and sustainability space.

Max's senior essay, An Index of Community Priorities to Inform Local Governance in New Haven, won The Library Map Prize.
