EVST News August 29, 2022 Happy First Week of Classes!EVST Program NewsMessage from the DUSWelcome to the start of a new semester! The first week back is a wondrous and occasionally stressful time when EVST majors fret over completing the major’s core and concentration requirements and when students in other majors look for environmentally themed courses that complement their plans of study. The questions I hear tend toward variations on these three. Why are so few of the core courses listed on the degree checklists being offered this term? Why can’t I find EVST courses that match my concentration (from majors) or that match my environmental interests (from non-majors)? How do I enroll in YSE courses? EVST BA and BS degree checklists always show more courses than are being offered in any given semester because not every course is offered every year and we construct the checklists to assure that EVST majors have options in each checklist category in every fall and spring semester. Our search of Yale course catalogs from 2015 to 2021 identified 1056 environmentally relevant courses that accept Yale College students for enrollment. 87 departments or programs sponsored at least one environmental course during the study period. For information on how to enroll in a YSE course and for in-depth answers to the first two questions, click on the link to EVST News link. They can answer questions about what it’s like to major in EVST, what classes you may wish to take in the major, and how to find your concentration courses. First-year and sophomore students are encouraged to contact EVST Mentors with questions about EVST. Peer mentors can be a great resource for advice about classes and various EVST research, extracurricular, or job opportunities. The DUS's can answer questions about receiving credit for a course or counting it toward the major, getting summer credits for a program, the senior essay, and other schedule-related questions. The EVST website and FAQs have a lot of program information as well. The important thing to remember is that, if you have a question and you don't know the answer, feel free to ask.
